kwikset switching key insert position?

Postby travrt » 2 Jan 2006 22:58

Ok so I have a couple year old set of kwikset locks for my home, and all is good except for 1 of the 4 the key goes in upside down instead of the proper way. So I took it apart and can't figure out how to do it. There is no hole on the outside knob, so it has to be tricker than the older ones. Here is a pic of the back side of the lock.

Sounds to me like it's installed upside down.

Ok but if I turn it upside down, then it will not go into the rest of the lock the correct way.

I'm afraid I can't give you specifics on that lock, as I can only see so much from the pictures, but there HAS to be a way to if the lock the other way around, otherwise you would not be able to install it correctly on either side of the door.

Have a closer look at it. I'm sure it will become clear.

I did that today. The way it is built is for maybe a right handed door and you have a lefthanded or vise versa. They are not able to make opposite. (cheap a$$ kwikset)

remove cylinder from KW

answer #24 gives you the basics, having the kw tool makes it about 1000x easier.

You might run the lock down to your local locksmith or even HD and have them remove the cylinder.

Aye, you just need to remove the cylinder. It's a little weird with Kwikset KIKs, but doable.

Install it the way it is, and pretend you are 'European.'

Go to kwikset website. Custoner service. More FAQ. Question #2. PDF file will show you how to remove the core. Then you just replace it pointing up.
