the lock says "Gaurd Security, Brooklyn, NY" any other details needed??
I think the problem is with the shim, it always shrivels up

Use some other material then, you are going in from the side and sliding it around to the latch arent you?

I'm not sure what material you used, but if it was metal from a soda can, I also found the shims too weak. Try the metal dust cover from a floppy disk.

just be careful with the floppy, i cut myself really bad making a shim out of one...
but i would try making a short and sturdy shim, try one of varying sizes. and make sure to press on both sides equally, i just use both thumbs. good luck, and try lots of different materials... even though there aren't that many...

I just went ahead and ordered some 'real' ones in various sizes (22 pieces I think it was) from southord.com. They're not expensive or anything, just don't have the tools or patience to make my own.

Well these worked significally worse that I imagines. Could only open 1 out of 6 padlocks I own, and that one was oooold. The rest have really small margins and I really can't see a use for these unless you're like a burglar in a school or something. Unreliable, that's all.

I hate shims... they work, but to be honest considering they'll only open the crappiest of the crappy it seems cheaper, and frankly smarter to simply pick them.

shims can be flimsy and i'm trying to develope a tougher shim. Im not sure what material to use but i'll be trying sheet metal. It might be a little too thick though. Also the size of the shim is a vey important factor, if it's to short it wont go deep enough, if it's to long it will rip easier. Im looking for a shim template and if i find it i will post it.
