shim doesnt fit

I made 3 or 4 padlock shims out of a coke can and i tried it out on my lock and it would go down the slot. one shim comes to a point while my other one is rounded. the rounded one sticks 1 1/2 cm down while the pointed one sticks 2 1/2 cms down. How wide should the (part that goes into the lock ) top part be? I wont go fit. btw, im using a regular ordinary masterlock combo wheel lock

You are going in from the side and sliding them around to the latches arent you?

yep the left side and turning it to the inside and it passes in front of me but i cantget it to go down the latch

You put it in the side and puch fully down then trun it into the latch, is that what your doing?

as it engages the latch try wiggling it a bit to ease it in.

If your doing it the way i said then the angles could be wrong on your shim.

there is no space between the lock adn the latch and if there is, its paper thin

Yep, you may have to pull the shackle sideways a bit to get it to fit.

alright ill try that then. Hopepfully it will work. shims can work on the non wheel combo locks too right?

Its a good test to see if the shackle is sprung, push it down and if it springs back then chances are it probably will shim in most cases, if you can shut the shackle up by pressing it in to the lock then yes it will shim, if the lock needs the combo messing up or a key to be turned before the shackle stays down then no it wont shim.

i am trying to make it work on a masterlock 1500. combination lock ( the ones you use on you lockers at highschool)

Haha. I just learned about this yesterday, killed 2 coke cans today, and found out how to make it work. I was using a standard spinning wheel masterlock combo thingamabobber and I opened it (to see where the actual spring lock thing was), slid my shim straight to the actual latch (while it was closed) and pushed until I knew it was far enough (took a few lucky tries before I figured out with where that was) and yanked the sh*t out of the shackle real fast (only one quick pull) and it works! Just changed this post after deleting my old one, hope it makes sense!

Well done except your supposed to put the shim down the side and then twist it into the latch but whatever worked for you i suppose although it does sound a little like youve forced the shackle and not actually shimmed it :lol:

When shimming the shackle shouldnt need to be tugged or anything except maybe a very light pull to get past the fact that youve now got a tighter hole due to half a coke can stuck in there.

Should work, I just made some out of a soda can... Tried it on my lock and opened I had to pull a bit hard but it worked.
