Missing multi-point lock parts

Postby taylorgdl » 5 Jan 2006 17:22

Did a survey on a friends new house, and found a double glazed patio door with missing mushroom style shoot bolts. Looks like the bolts screw in, and 4 out of 5 have been removed. All other furniture is in place, but there are no manufactures marks or name.

Is this a common occurance ? and how easy are the replacement parts to come by ? Or will he have to replace the entire locking mechanism ?

Any comments ?

I take it there are corresponding 'keeps' on the other side? somtimes you only get a normal locking mech with none of the multipoints but some firms still fit th same mechs, i personally havent come across it but they could have been removed by someone who was having problems with the door and couldnt be bothered getting it sorted properly.

Yes, there are corresponding keeps, and I also had the thought that the previous owner, an elderly woman, was having problems with the door. The door is also very stiff, so she may not have used it at all.

Not sure what system you are talking about, is the locking system just on one side of the door like the aluminium locking system or is the system all the way round the door ?

If its the ali door system, you can thread in a machine screw with the correct size head to locate behind the stricker, if it the system that goes all the way round you can take off rollers or bolts from another locking system ( old one you replaced ) and rivet it onto the door that needs repairing.

I have done both and got a result

Sounds like the door has dropped and caused the multipoint to bind. I doubt you will find spares so best to replace and make sure door is properly adjusted via hinges or toe and heel the door (do a search on this as there is a good link somewhere) Multipoints without a manufacturers brand on the strip are quite often KFV and can be bought from duffels DG supplyline etc

lift the whole door leaf out and check for any markings
or serial numbers?

if none do as don said put some grub screws in they only slide up
and down in the mech so as long as they're at the right distance
they'll latch into the frame.

if not i'll get em a whole new patio £550 plus fitting , traveling ,
expences , etc.

:P

Its a sliding patio door, no markings, but I think you're right, machine screws look about right, and could well do the trick. I think there might even be screw threads in the original fittings.

I'm doing this for a mate, and I doubt he wants a new door etc.

However, if it was his garage, with a new kawasaki and BMW bikes, it might be a different matter . . .

Thanks for all your help.
