How to bend wiper inserts into torque wrenches - with heat?

Postby Olcaytug » 7 Jan 2006 0:30

When I bend the wiper inserts to exactly 90degrees (after 85 degrees), a cracking sound comes even if I manage to prevent snapping.

Should I use heat in order to prevent this???

Regards...

thats pretty odd. you really shouldnt hear or see any cracking. are you sure you are using the correct part of the blade. heat is a bad idea because it weakens the metal.

i clean bend should show no signs of buckeling or tearing of metal, and looks the same as a premade tension wrench.
hopes this helps :)

You should be using the thin shiney metal thats in between the rubber of the blade, try and use an original blade as the after market ones in your country may be sub standard but thats only an idea, you shouldnt heat them nor should you need to i think this was mentioned on one of your previous posts.

You should be able to hold one end in some pliers and bend the other side over with your fingers, if you are holding both sides with pliers and holding the pliers touching then i would imagine you are stretching the material instead of bending it.

Show us a pic f the material, how your bending it and a finished wrench for more advice

Try putting a 45' bend approx' 6mm from the end of the strip and then another at 45' 3mm along from that and this will give you a 90' bend avoiding any fatigue to the metal, NO?

as per ur OP. heat with a propane torch or hell even a gas stove that will do,
heat about 1/2"- 1" where u want the bend, bend the metal, quench in water or let cool by it self. see what happins.

In agreeance with the the previous posters, you shouldn't need heat at all when using wiper blade inserts, unless they aren't made of spring steel (which is possible in the newer or foreign cars), or do they have the notches precut into them? Those seem to be fairly weak. Hope this helps you....

Devnill, Olcaytug is right. I have had some wipper blade inserts snap on me while trying to make a wrench. I find some of the modern "cheap" makes don't seem to be solid metal and seem to be some sort of metal alloy or metal/plastic which when you bend past (approx) 60° snap or sound like they are about to crack.

I assume heating the metal would help with the bend, but take advice from other member, not me, for attempting that.
