What to look for in a BUMPKEY

Postby crazyguy_07 » 17 Jan 2006 2:32

Can somebody please help me with my quest to find a good bumpkey and your opinion on them.

I have heard you are suppose to get a key cut to depth '9', ive seen on the internet that sum ppl have it cut to '10'.
I would also like to know, if i go to a locksmith what exactly do i tell him.
Because locks have 5 pins 6 pins. how can you tell how many pins a lock has. Also if i wanted to open 5 pin locks 6 pin locks and 7 or what ever. do i need to get a key for a 5 pin, 6 pin, and 7 and so on?

I would also like to know what do i have to do after the key is cut? do i have to file a certain ammount of mm off the tip and shoulder? if so how much?

Please explain to me, your help may save my life.

THANKS GUYS-

IMHO I like deeper than the deepest cut so I would do a 10. It would probably be pretty hard to get a locksmith to cut a 999 key just because they know what they are. If you could get a locksmith to do it that would be great. Don't buy bump keys off the internet, they are way too expensive for what you can do yourself. Another option is to buy space & depth keys, they can be found on ebay for about $5-7 US.

Forgot to add this. More than likely if you have a keyway with varying differences in pins, you will need each key (5, 6, or 7 pins etc.) There are certain keys like kwikset 6 pin fit in a 5 pin and would bump both 5 & 6 pin. If you went to a locksmith to cut a bumpkey tell him the deepest depth, eg; Kwikset 777777 (for a 6 pin) Schlage 99999 etc.
