grinding

When it comes down to it there is nothing better than manual tools for your Lock pick Set, whether they be retail, homebrew, macgyver style. DIY'ers look here.

he uses a dremel but a file will do just takes longer
even if you use a dremel you'll need to file anyway to
help shape the pick as well as different grades of emery paper
to aquire the right finish for the pick to work.

hope it helps

How much longer?
like... I tried to do that on a screwdriver with a file, but it took me 2 days

and... if I want to shape the pick with a file, which shape should I make while I'm working with the bench grind?

Thank you :)

bench grinder is absolutely safer than the dremel! But if you make a bad mistake, it can obviously give more damage.

It is really difficult to shape snakes using the cutting wheels, you may hurt yourself badly. Files or tiny grinding tips of dremel will be easier.. But files will take a long time.

You can make the details on the bench grinder if you have skill.. But making small mistakes is usually inevitable. And you should grind very slowly for the details, using very little force. And always quench after every second when it comes to shaping the tip.

Anyway I would suggest a basic imitate of dremel. They are really cheap and the only drawback is the lack of variable speed. But do not use cutting wheel, especially on those cheap imitates... They may be really dangerous!

Hope this helps.

Regards...

You will know.. you should go to as much detail as you can until you become afraid that you will make a mistake.

As for the files... Actually I didnt try long since nothing changed after a few minutes of cutting. But with that speed Im sure it will take a really long time unless you apply too much force (which will decrease the strength of the material).

Perhaps it wont take that much time if you apply tempering tactics.. But you will never achieve the same strength of the carbon steel again, unless you are really proficient.

the templates are a big problem for me too. The templates on Zeke's site are wonderful, but it is really difficult to copy them on the hacksaw blades with a small error!

Instead I convert the photos into two dimensional drawings using the paint inside the windows. Then I have them printed on tranparent sheets. While making the picks I shape them by comparing them to these transparent drawings.

Here is an example: (Southord slimline middle hook)

But this is a procedure only I use, since I couldn't manage to copying the templates on the blades. That's why I can not suggest it or compare it with other methods.. But it is simple

here's a couple CAD blueprints i made, based on hacksaw blades as the material involved (even includes holes!) - maybe it'll help.
