decoding control key for BEST SFIC

Postby Benji026 » 21 Jan 2006 23:49

Hi everyone! It's been a long time since I've been on this site, I hope everyone had a good new year and is doing well. :) To make a long story short, it's my job to replace all the locks in the apartment complex I take care of, and I lost my control key. I've picked an SFIC to the control shear line before, but it would be an absolute nightmare to do that to every single lock in the building! (I'm not that good and there are easily over 50 of these I have to replace with new cores). On Matt Blaze's paper on SFIC locks he says:

"Decoding the control key is especially straightforward; it can be unambiguously determined from a single core simply by measuring the topmost pin of each pin stack."

Does this mean I measure the length of the top pin with my caliper, then convert it to key cuts using my BEST key combination code book and repeat for each pin stack? To make things more confusing, in LSS+, they say:

"to determine the pinning for control key, the difference in pin length between the shallowest master key cut and the diameter of the control plug is computed. The pin length will be the difference between the pin-stack, encompassing the bottom pin and all master wafers, and the distance remaining to the top of the control plug."

followed by this chart as an example

control pin 4 6 3 2 -
master pin 3 - 3 3 2
bottom pin 3 4 2 2 5

control key 8 8 6 5 5
master key 3 4 2 5 7
change key 6 4 5 2 5

Anyone else confused? I'm really hoping all you master locksmiths on this site can help me with this, because I'm lost. I would really appreciate your help. :D

control for sfic

The pin stack in a best style A2 system should add up to a total of 23

As long as they used the correct top pins , you can just measure the top pins , convert the pin to the correct depth , and subtract that cut # from 13 to determine the control cut.

Simply put: 13 - top pin = control cut
