Abus 88/50 puzzle

Abus 88/50 puzzle

I have two 88/50s, neither is direct from a distributor. The one on the left has a smooth round surround on the keyway. The other seems to have been machined, and there is also a sign of a centre punch mark. The smooth surround can actually be rotated, the machined one seems jammed solid, and seems not as tightly fitting to the body, to the extent that I can just see past the edge into the chamber beyond.

I just wonder if anyone else has come across this lock, and which version they have, and any theories as to why the right hand one looks like is does. I have tried to unscrew the machined surround but it won't shift for me.

By the way the one on the left is cut away on the other side.

I could be wrong here, but since the one on the left is a cutaway, my guess is that he knows HOW they work illusion. I think he was asking why the difference in the keyway. Now go cry in your corner. :)

The one on the right has a screw in the shackle hole that holds a small bearing in place that prevents that cap from rotating. Without that bearing in place, you can unscrew that cap and disassemble the lock. I would guess the one on the left is the same, but does not need to be unscrewed and just drops out.

Thanks for trying though Illusion :)

As db spotted, I have an idea how they work! I just wonder if I'm correct in assuming the right hand one has been worked on by someone, or if they ever come like that as normal.

I'm rather suspecting that they right hand one (which was suposed to be 'new') has been used for parts for the cutaway one, but I can't quite see how that would work...

okay.... the Abus plus 88/50 I have looks like the one on the left.

I would be interested in knowing how to take mine apart though... I can't see any way to... :?

TOWCH: I think you're right. There's something down there. I missed it because the other one doesn't have that. I'll have to investigate further.

You have seen these (with the machining) before then?

There was some reference on an Abus distributors site to a rekeyable version. Maybe it's something to do with that.

Anyway on closer examination I can see a thread at the bottom of the shackle hole as though there used to be a screw there. Underneath this is a sort of dark coloured cone shaped thing which has no obvious means to get hold of it. I guess this is the thing stopping me unscrewing the keyhole surround.

OK maybe no-one is desperate to know this but I hate to leave the story incomplete. (It seems I have the re-keyable version. It must really exist!)
The strange object at the bottom of the shackle hole turned out to be a screw operated by an Allan key (3mm). I didn't immediate realise because my Allan key has a silly round bit on the end and didn't contact the hex shape. I took it out (with a screw extractor  ) and then out fell two ball bearings. Then the end cap turned by hand, and it looks like I could take out all the disks now.

Illusion: if you were especially keen to get one of these I could put you in touch with the eBay guy I got it from. PM me if you are interested.

Thanks to all who replied and special thanks to TOWCH for the right answer.

You will find that all rekeyable Abloys, Abus, Baton etc. will have the same type of retaining plug (2-4 machined inward grooves, for unscrewing).

The screw is always on the side that (when locked) the shackle is at the bottom of the padlock.

May i ask how much the padlock was?
