Pls don't laugh - but thanks to all who have helped

When it comes down to it there is nothing better than manual tools for your Lock pick Set, whether they be retail, homebrew, macgyver style. DIY'ers look here.

Hi all

As a newbie i spent ages going thru all the threads and uncovered loads of useful tips and pics of making your own picks. So last weekend I set about making some of my own based upon your own designs and came up with those in the pic (if my linking works). Sorry for blurred pic but I do not have a camera with macro. I used the steel inserts from wiper blades and for the handles I packed them out a little then applied heatshrink over them. They work on the practise locks, some better than others depending on what brand/type but I have not had the opportunity to use them out in the field. But at least I now have a few more 'weapons of mass entry' in my arsenal. Thanks guys!

regards

It looks like you're good at making picks anyway! Far better than me by the looks of it!! Keep at it and you'll get even better.

Looks like you've done a very nice job. I have personally found Bogotas to be among the hardest shapes to get right, and your first efforts came out far better than my own.

Just be sure you sand the snot out of 'em. It makes a HUGE difference.

Great work!

Since i took the pic I have sanded down using wet and dry and now I can shave in them!

All were made just with a bench grinder - no dremmel or anything other tool. A steady hand and plenty of light!

Wow...

I envy your skills (And that of the many other pick-makers.)

I made 2 picks. My first pick broke  on the first lock that I tried it on-- I think it was a lowly masterlock, but I am not sure...

My second one has never seen a pin in its life. It sits on my dresser, not yet used

Sorry for the double post, but I HAD to add something:

This is where we separate the pick makers from the artists...

If you've had problems with your picks either breaking or bending too easily then that means the metal needs to be heat treated, which can be done fairly easily with just a propane torch (about $10-20US from any hardware/home improvement store) or you could even use your stove if you've got gas (the gas used pretty much universally for heating/cooking IS propane, so you'll be fine doing that) which I have done and it can be made to work without a lot of trouble, and you have the added benefit of being right near the kitchen sink.

There have been at least one or two really good posts on here about how exactly to go about doing this, so seek and ye shall find (read: search!).

Oh, just an added tip: fire extinguishers are your friend, and if you're playing with burning propane then YES, you should have one (the hardware store where you would get your propane torch will be more than happy to provide you with one at a very reasonable price).

You have no idea how many times that has been repeated...But thank you :D

I think I am just scared of fire or something...

Or if I actually decided to test my second home-made pick, I might discover something...

I have issues... But I'll get over it soon...
