Yes/no.

Paperclips vary a bit in strength, and whilst some may be strong enough, the majority are crap and worthless.

You CAN pick them with a safety pin that has the end bent to 90 degrees, but it's still pretty crummy.

Get a proper pickset.

A bent bicycle spoke is somewhat similar to a paperclip, but much stronger, and said to make due as a lockpick. But I agree with the above sentiments-- buy some real lockpicks. They're inexpensive, as little as $1 per pick.

Honestly, my favorite tension wrenches are the ones I make out of safety pins. Paperclips aren't strong enough to make good picks though.

I can't pick a door. but...depending on the lock... A few... yes. Others... it is much easier with two paperclips. Most... No.

Ya you can get bike spokes hammer it down a few times then file it down or use a dremmel tool to make the head

If you want to play spy and hide the picks you're carrying, can't you close the saftey pin up and hide that it's a pick? Then you can swallow it too, just to be on the safe side.

Note before reading: All this is based on MY experiences with the "Wonderous" (I'm Joking and using this word lightly) Paper clip. If you can pick something that I cannot with these cheap metal "thingies," I will feel very happy to hear about them.

The reason I care about paper clips at all is that I watch MacGyver. Whenever he "Picks" a lock, I get a little upset. Such a CHEATER.

As Stlbolt said, It really depends on the lock...
And almost never with just a paper clip alone.

Are we talking Sledge? I say never.
Masterlock? I believe even these lowly locks cannot be defeated with a paperclip.
What about the lock on the file cabinet in my living room that came from the Marc's store down the street? Yeah...Piece of cake, but do not forget your tension wrench.

I dislike the paperclip greatly, for it always gets me very angry .
I have given up on them, and just use SouthOrd. I suggest the same, but testing the boundries of our weak, paper-holding friends is rather tempting... Every so often, I do admit to using them, but with VERY little sucess.

But it can be done.

kwikset and weiser are not so bad with a pair of paper clips, but schlage springs are harder, so i wouldn't even want to try.
