Dont laugh at me

Postby GWhnt2 » 19 Feb 2004 0:05

I just put new doors in my small office facility that I plan to rent out. I had just gotten done moving in a desk and some chairs and left to go eat lunch. As soon as I closed the door I realized I had left the set of keys in the office. I tried using thin pieces of metal to try to get the thing to retract the lock thing and it starts to and when it is about halfway out it stops. The door swings outward so it is very easy to get to the bolt thing. The lock is not a deadbolt is is just the handle lock.I really want to use the accesibility of the bolt to my advantage( I dont wanna pick the lock if I can avoid it) I tried to pick it using the advice on this site and I cant seem to do it.I just want to bypass it.I really need to get in there so I can start renting please reply I would be so grateful. The best description of the lock is;it is used on the exterior of office and portable buildings.Doesnt have a nob it has a handle.

If the door opens out you might be able to try this.

Get two thin knives.
1. Take one knife and press it hard into the bolt that is on the side opposite of the door, now twist the knife so that the bolt is pushed back into the lock.
2. Now take the second knife and press it hard into the bolt, on the opposite side of the first knife and right up agianst the door. You want to press hard enough so that when you release the first knife the bolt won't move.
3. Repeate step #1 until bolt is fully retracted.

Good luck.

In the interest of helping this person out who seems legitimate, I'm going to leave this thread up for a couple of days or until he mentions he's been helped (whichever comes first), and then it will be deleted.

Just thought y'all should know. :)

Should be very easy. Get yourself a gallon of milk. Drink the milk. Now take the carton and cut out a strip, perhaps three inches wide and eight or so inches long. Now cut a notch in it, an inch and a half or two inches deep.

You should be able to figure it out from there. You're going after the bolt.

Be aware, that you want to attack the bolt from behind. Once you do this, you may want to consider a more adequate security solution.

You may have pushed in an "anti jimmy" device, or something similar.

Most locks sold today have an "anti-jimmy" device. It is a little rod/ seperate looking latch, that keeps the main latch from fully retracting if the anti-jimmy device is pushed in. Thats all I should say on an open forum.

I had this problem with an exposed bolt on a door that opened outwards, once the door was open, I examined the bolt and noticed that there was a small cut on the angled face of the bolt which caught the blade on the knife and made it feel like an anti jimmy (it wasn't that good a lock - ERA rim mounted body with a Yale cylinder fitted - I really love carpenters and DIYers  )

Opened it with a slim jim used as a shove knife. Try working the bolt from underneath with the two knife trick or a THIN piece of steel cut into a "J" shape with the hook of the "J" fairly sharp.

If you can see the bolt - look to see if there is a small peg which sticks out either above or underneath the bolt or if the bolt seems to be made of three pieces of metal. If so that's the anti jimmy.

If you have an anti jimmy, it probably has harded steel (anti drill) pins inside so that idea is out unless you have hardplate bits. You will have to use either picks, letterbox kit or a locksmith the other option is that you are left with brute force and ignorance (ie a carpenter)
sledgehammers make excellent back up picks!
