Diamond or round?

Postby Kevo » 6 Feb 2006 21:42

Which do you like better the half diamond or the half round? and why.
I think I am leaning towards the half round at this point. It seems I can get a better feel for the pins with the round. with the diamond it's just a matter of luck for the feel.

i personally would lean towards a short hook if i were yyou. they have great feedback on binding pins compared to half diamonds or half round. If i had to use a half diamond or round i woulkd definately use a diamond

really it all depends on your style, and what lock you are trying to pick. For example, if I was trying to open a master lock, then I would use the half round, as this is like a master lock key. If I was trying to open a kwik-set or an ez-set, or some type of bunk dead bolt, then I would use a small hook. If I was trying to open a high security 7 pin KIK best keyway, then I would use a half diamond. It really all depends on you and what works best for you. I don't use the same picks as someone else would to open the same lock. Its all a preference.
I hear what you are saying.....that doesn't mean I agree with you....Just that I am nodding my head to placate you and silence your futile attempts to win the argument.

I prefer ball picks of any sort when picking wafer locks.

Due to my initial ignorance at lockpicking, I didn't know of any other kind of pick other than the half-diamond. So that's what I made. And that's what I learned to use.
I've still yet to try any other style. I've bought one of every lock (pin-tumblers) that Home Depot sells, and the half-diamond works great for all of them. I even use it for a few disc tumblers.

The hook is the pick I used first when I started learning how to pick locks so I perfer that also. But in some small keyways that limits the picks movement I perfer the diamond.
If a lock is a puzzle, then its key is the complete picture

So when you use the diamond do you single pin pick with it or just sort of scrub it. If you do single pin pick it with the diamond then could you tell me a good way to know which pin you are on. it is real easy with the half hook just because but it seems a little harder with the diamond.

I guess you could scrub with the diamond, but the snake is really better for that. I use the diamond when my small hook is too restricted to get a good feel for the lock

I actually rest the bottom of the pick on the ward, and use that as a pivot to lever the pick. So it's usually has about a 5 degree angle. So whenever you pull the pick outward, you can feel it click to the next pin.

I haven't had much success with scrubing.

As I am still learning the intricacies of single picking I favour the half diamond as it more closely resembles the teeth of the actual key and I currently seem to have more success with it than other picks! :)

I'm just starting to use a half diamond, i have made a few different ones, but never really used them. For the most part I use a hook, and an altered hook - it has a bit more of a curve on it and I use the back part of it as a round pick. I have never used the round on anything other than filing cabinet locks and others with wafers.

I don't think I even use the picks for their intended purposes.

a hook would be my choice of picks, more feel for the pins
