How did you become a locksmith.

Pull up a chair, grab a cold one, and talk about life as a locksmith. Trade stories of good and bad customers, general work day frustrations, any fun projects you worked on recently, or anything else you want to chat about with fellow locksmiths.

How did you become a locksmith.

Just how did you become one / how do i become one. Do i take some courses on the subject and buy tools and a business licence and thats it? Is there any formal schooling in Ontario? Storys about how you got into it?

it got me hired, and i've seen a lot of others get passed over since, so it may have shown initiative, but knowledge-wise i wouldn't really say it gave me much other than a bit more familiarity with the very basics.

Ontario I believe has two schools that offer locksmithing classes. No province yet has REQUIRED training to call yourself a locksmith.

In a nutshell, a business license in your province is "good" enough.

However, currently in Alberta the legislation that governs the security industry is undergoing a major overhaul, and it may not be very long before business owners or at least one employee of a company would be required to be a CJL or certified journeyman locksmith. Alberta has (as far as I'm aware) the only government approved training facility to gain such a certification.

Fortunately, they offer distance learning options that are quite doable. Google Red Deer College locksmith program. The instructor there is a guy by the name of Shawn Lovell. He'll be able to help you out if your interested in pursuing that.

I'm currently in my last year of the 4 year program, and I can tell you the program is very thorough, but more expensive than inferior "correspondence" courses.

my brother in law suggested either airconditioning mechanic or locksmith. The latter sounded more fun

I found an ad in the paper and took my resume' there. I applied and got the job. been there since january last year and just started trade school about 2 months ago.
