Medeco Locks

Does anyone have any advice on how to pick a medeco cylinder?

These have been discussed in detail before. I have not heard of anyone on the forum actually being at a level where they can pick these. I could not find an introduction from you and I was not able to work out from your posts if you are at this level, let us know if you can get any of this info to work.

Advice? Well, if you need to ask here, you probably dont have enough experience to even begin picking medeco. Start picking pin tumbler locks, then wafer/sidebar locks. If you can do these, then you have a shot at beginning to touch a medeco. Ive been doing this for close to ten years now, and some wafer sidebar locks still keep me awake at night....

Tunneler I have been a locksmith for 15 years(God that sounds like a long time). I ran a lockout service for 5 years after I went into institutional locksmithing. I have gotten around 2 Medeco locks. One was a bypass because someone was late for a plane/meeting/deal of the century. The only successful pick was complete blind luck. I put a pick gun in the door and the cylinder turned in two clicks. While the guy was getting his card to have a new key made I tried for 10 min to repeat the feat and got nowhere. I only knew one person who could reliably pick a Medeco and he had been in the business for 30 years. It still took him as long as an hour to pick a five pin Medeco and this was a guy that could single pin pick just about anything else in less than 5 minutes. If you want a hefty challenge buy a Medeco and work on it for a couple of years. I still can't get the one I bought 2 years ago.

I have been picking locks for about six months. I bought a defiant deadbolt to practice on awhile back, picked it in the first minute, then returned it. Then I bought the "Maximum Security Kwikset" it has 6 pins, that are "pick resistant," but no spooled or mushroom drivers. I now can consistantly pick it with all my picks (short hook, small half diamond, large half diamond, snake, jagged snake, long jagged pick) reliably under 10 seconds, with the jagged snake under 5 seconds. I have tried picking a medeco, but to no luck, I think I have got 4 or 5 pins to set a couple times. I can recognize when I get a false set from the mushroom pin and it usually results in no pins and the sound of only one falling. I recently ordered a medeco off ebay hoping for better luck. I disassembled one and there is only one mushroom pin of the six pins and side bar. No luck yet, if anyone can consistently pick one I would be really glad to hear any advice.

You have bitten of much more than you will be able to chew. Say a piece the size of Russia. Go out and get yourself some American brand laminated padlocks. They are fairly cheap, and some come with quite a small keyway. Pick those. Consistantly. Then go out and get a Schlage cylinder with 5 spool pins, and have it keyed high low high low high etc. Pick that. Consistently. Then go out and get some American locks with serrated pins. Pick those consistently. Try your hand at some Best IC. Then go and begin to do research on Medeco locks. Learn everything about them. THe operating principles, service information etc. THen go and get a 3 pin medeco switch lock. Strip it down to one pin. See if you can pick that with reasonable success. Work from there. But, fully realize, a vast majority of people will never be able to pick a Medeco lock (although decoding is possible with Falle tools)

oh yeah...forgot to mention...i used a half eaten pear and used the stem as the tension wrench and gnawed down a #2 pencil for a pick...honestly I haven't even bought a Medeco yet and when I do it'll get locked away till it can be classified antique before I even think about tearing it apart and picking it one cylinder at a time...for anyone that has had success with these...even just being lucky...APPLAUSE!!!...you done good!!!
