Like the title says, I need help with filing down key blanks. How should I go about doing this? Could anyone spin me a thread were I could find info on this? (besides toool.com's video?) Any help would be much appreciated. Thank you.

you're better off starting with a cut key than a blank because that will give you the spacing.

for weiser, kwikset and schlage the deepest used cut goes down to where th "blade" of the key ends. blade refers to the thinner part where the bitting is. your cuts should go just a bit deeper, and should ideally be about the same width as they started out.

You should search the site and read how to make them to be honest, there already a lot of good and great posts on this theres no need to start another thread.

Mainly look for a pdf from zeke79 and look at the toool video on their site.

'Bumping Revisited' 2005 Win Media 461 Mb <- This one is about bumping.
impression of the Dutch Open 2005 and interview with Dr. Torsten Quast MP4 139 Mb <- This one is just coverage of the 2005 Dutch Open. It's worth a watch.
Physical Security Workshop 2004 Win Media 620 Mb <- Very good workshop that talks about the COMPLETE security solution, not just the locks.
H2K lockpick workshop Win Media 424 Mb <-Lockpicking
H2K2 lockpick workshop Mpeg VCD 586 Mb <-Lockpicking

Does that explain things a bit better?

hey,
Thanks you guys. All your info is helpful, but im still a little confused on the spacing of the pins. Toool's video does not mention spacing for different bump keys. And I dont have a computerized lock smithing machine. It only works if theres another key in the machine for it to duplicate.

If you are starting with an uncut key and you don't want to muck with charts and rulers, you can just make like you're impressioning the lock to find where the pins are. Sand or file the top of the key blank until it is smooth and shiny, or file it to a knife edge. Now put it in the lock, turn hard one way, wiggle it up and down, turn the other way, repeat. Take the key out, observe it closely in strong, directinal light, and you should be able to make out where the pins are. Now just file it down.
