It's a pin-tumbler lock. Except that it seems to have a thin keyway making manouvering picks harder, there is little I can really add.

It's likely a 5, or 6 pin lock.

The part at the back is called the cam - when the plug turns, it turns the cam. The cam operates the latch mechanism it goes into. It is of little importance in terms of picking however so it's of no concern to you. :)

If that locck is what I think it is, it won't give a full turn to open or close, only 90º. But if you have the key you can alway check it.

Let Steve practise on your 3 pin Yale first, Jason, till he gets the hang of it.

The lock is one of many imported locks sold at discount retailers. It should accept a kwicset keyblank and will usually have a slightly undersized plug, Ive had to make a special follower for these locks.
When keying the lock use deeper cuts because there may not be a short enough pin available for a shallow cut

Mountain security

Postby lockedin » 21 Mar 2006 6:10

It looks like a "Mountain Security" knob found at Walmart and made by Hampton Ltd., the same company that owns Brinks. It is a cheaper alternative to more well known brand names and indeed does have 5 pins. My roommate has that exact knob on his door.
