i know i should have pics to go along with this but for now i got nothing.
i was really stuck trying to pick a mailbox lock with the dominion keyway, s54f i think, anyways i couldn't pick it for the life of me.
when i pulled out the top pins they were strangely tapered. not rounded in the way you sometimes see pins that are supposed to set themselves as long as they are close enough but tapered evenly and having a sharp edge.
bah okay
something like this

note that the angle and length of the tapered part is much sharper than what you'd normally see.
anyways, is this supposed to make the pins harder to set or easier to set (but done on a lower budget)?

Looks like a 'mushroom'-pin to me.
When handled wrongly, it jammes any further setting.

no, not a mushroom because it tapers in right from the end, and not a spool pin either. it's looks sort of like how some of the better quality top pins will have rounded or beveled ends, but the angle is sharper, enough that i can't imagine it would make the pins set easier

Yeah the technique for these false binding pins is to rake them, good luck picking them, you'd have to know picking very well to do that, but yeah, get a good raking technique and these aren't "as big" of a problem.
someone love me!

When you find the security pins try over lifting them by this i mean lift them higher than the shear line, then let them drop down to set at the shear line, youll find this a lot easier.
Raking isnt the answer to security pins in a half decent lock but yes in a cheap lock its more than feasable.
Does anyone else see the big fat burr on that pin jason has linked to?
