Deformations on ASSA Twin 6000 Plugs

Postby n2oah » 18 Feb 2006 16:37

I bought a bunch of ASSA Twin 6000 locks off of ebay about a month ago. I opened them up, and found out that the locks had only the last 2 out of the 5 sidebar pins installed, so, I sent a message to the locksmith to get the rest of the pins. He said the reason why he doesn't put in all of the pins is because the the side pins stick after some useage. I was skeptical about this.
So a week went by, and the side pins arrived. I started to put them in the locks, but they wouldn't go in. I took out a hand lens and analyzed the holes for the sidebar pins. It turned out that they were deformed. Here is a picture of one of the moderate deformations under a hand lens:

The deformation is circled in red.
Can somebody tell me why this happens?

Could be a manufactoring error. You think you can fix it with a small hobby file?

Yes, I fixed it by rounding it off with a small dremel bit. However, it is still a pain in the arse.

None of my assa plugs have this problem. As a matter of fact, most of the pins move so freely that if you remove the key from the plug outside of the shell the pins and springs drop onto the floor. It is possible that those are just a bad batch from assa.
For the best book out there on high security locks and their operation, take a look at amazon.com for High-Security Mechanical Locks An Encyclopedic Reference. Written by our very own site member Greyman! A true 5 Star read!!

Well I've still never been able to open my ASSA RUKO 2 padlock without the key, are they even pickable or is this high security advanced forum information?
