Does anyone know exactly how to do the mod for converting the 8 pin to a 7 pin? If so, would you be so kind as to explain in detail...preferably with pics if anyone has done this.

Cormu states that the 8 won't work on a 7 which I imagine is true before it's been modified and Nasydave states that it can be modified to work on 7's. Also, when modified, will it work with all 7-pin configurations?

I'd like to purchase one and if I can get away with just buying the 8 pin model then that's what I'll do...call me cheap!

BTW, if these answers have already been mentioned please forgive me. I've been searching and reading many posts and I can't find the answers.

i got one of the "old style" tubular lock picks from a friend. the kind w/ the brass ring and small black sliders. i have a bike lock w/ a tubular lock that i have been practicing on but cant get it to work. i have some experience with pin and tumbular locks and can pick then in about 15 seconds easily. but these tubular locks just dont seem to work for me. the friend who gave it to me can work it so there is nothing wrong w/ the pick.

can anyone give me a step by step walk through of how to use it? or at least some pointers?

many thanks

Hello icelos,

Not to be smart or anything, but maybe the best thing for you to do is take the pick and the lock to your friends house so he could show you how to use it. Seeing him use the pick may be the easiest way for you to learn. Other than that, do a search (on this forum) for tubular picking and you should come across quite a bit of info including some short videos. I'll look for the video and send you the link (unless someone else beats me to it).

Good luck with the lock.

I would suggest that you borrow one of your friends tubular locks that he can pick with that specific pick. Ive encountered several strange bike locks that are oddly sized, etc that could be quite a hassle. If you are in the US, radio shak sells a low quality tubular switch lock for alarm systems thats great to learn on.

When applying torque using the pick, think as though you were picking a pin tumbler lock-- use only a little torque. Check to make sure your sliders are freely moving as well.

Tubular locks have the most threads than any other lock. The thread I enjoy the most is the following:

thanks for all your input...unfortunatly my friend has since moved away and i havent been able to contact him :( ive done some searching online and have realized that the "old style" southord pick i have is out dated/a crappy model and am negioationg a refund for a "new style" southord pick.

can a 8 pin pick be used on a 7 pin lock? i have heard that you can just not use one of the feelers and 8 pin pick will fit a 7 pin lock. any one have experience w/ this?

also i have watched 3 videos of tubular locks being picked w/ the new and old style southord picks. in all 3 videos they insert the pick and just rotate it back and forth, kinda jiggling untill it opens. however this is totally different then the instructions which come w/ the pick. but obviously this technieque works... does anyone have input/advice/experience on these different styles?

many thanks to all!

Throw out the instructions that come with your pick. They are worthless. Search for Dr.Dave's posts on this matter.

With the "wiggle" method you should watch how much torque you apply to the lock, and often you must adjust the tension on the picking needles. IF you find that they are all pushed back very rapidly, you need to increase tension. Again, for other methods... search for Dr. Dave's posts.

unfortunatly my old pick dosent had a vention adjuster that works very well... i have a feeling that is the main problem as many people say they use a very high tension on thses locks. hopefully i will b getting my new pick soon
