This is the funnest thing in the world and its so easy its stupid. I'll say it, shims suck, they break and are very flimsy and probably only open the lock 40% of the time :roll:

, the homemade ones are even worse but are probably just as reliable. I got bored and decided to find a new way in. I noticed a keyhole on the back. It's small and I needed a smaller tension wrench so I used my homemade one,(that I learned from pyros awesome video), and grinded down the tip a bit so that it fit. I then used my mini c rake and stuck it in and pulled it out and the piece of junk opened. I think these are the older still of combo locks because the new ones dont have key holes. :shock:

Yeah, some have a key override on them.

I've had success shimming those combo locks to be honest.

I think thos are mainly used on school lockers, atleast thats what they use at my school.

Shims are perfectly ok in the right hands, i cant speak for home made ones especially your home made ones but commercial ones are ok.

Master combo locks are by far the easiest padlocks to shim.

thats not necesarily going to be only old locks. I just bought 8 of them brand new off ebay for like a dollar each. The key hole is for adminastrators to have access to the lock, w/o having to know the combo. They are usually in schools, but you will find them in bus stations, locker rooms, anywhere where they issue you a lock. Even some poorly run self storage places. I usually use a half round, they fall open in less than 3 sec with it.

i remember back in middleschool i was given a lock and it had the key in back but at the end of the year they either collected them or charged you $7.....what a ripoff :lol:

anyways i kept the lock and was like i wonder whats inside......i always do stuff like this
and so i tossed it at the ground which opened the bugger LOL

and then brought it to the shop and grinded the back off and opened it all

I have this weird pet peeve about jimmying locks. It just seems like cheating, and it's not nearly as satisfying.

I like to either pick the lock or crack the code.

And I definately don't like tearing them apart unless for the purpose of learning about them.
Anybody can do that.

Home made padlock shims made from the metal from 1.44 MB disks or the like do not work as well as some sources say on new master locks.. The older masterlocks had hugeee holes so shimming them were easy.. these new ones my little bro has.. the space is so small getting the shim in there is an issue... once its in.. its so tight that the shims won't go down any further or move. (These are home made shims) I've tried making padlock shims from numerous materials (mostly the ones that are suggested from various sites claiming success) I've yet to try a commercial brand of padlock shims but I remeber someone mentioning that its not as easy as it used to be even with commercial shims.

I've used home made shims made out of soda cans and the floppy disk metal as you were just saying. I use them with a needle nose plier for grip and for power but I can only use it on one of my master locks. It has a key hole on the back (I found it at school so I don't know how knew it is) and my new one which I bought pretty recently will not work. I just can't shim that one. I don't know if they just added in something to make it harder to shim but for the one that it does work on its great.

They made the space smaller.. compare your old master lock and the new one.. you'll notice that the holes that fit the shackle are much much smaller now and its so much harder to open it because the shims just wont fit.. I had to jam my home made shims in there.. I'd put a flat head screw driver on top and would hammer in the shim.. (don't try that.. its not fun... trust me.. I was supporting the shim itself with my hands.. the flat head driver slid off the top of the shim and landed right in my hand..
lol, youd think i learned my lesson,, but i went right back at it... i have massive cuts from that incident.. but I got it open!...)
I've yet to try to shim them with a professional set.. but i just don't feel like spending 20+ on a set. Yet from what i've seen on hackaday? (dont know the exact site) they say they've shimmed a recent model of the master combo locks.. so I dont know what to tell you.
