What is this key?

Postby horwichg » 23 Feb 2004 22:16

I was watching t.v, like i do every night (i really need a girl friend :D ) when a commercial for "Castrol GTX" came on. It was very interesting as it showed the process of starting the car, but went from inserting the key, to turning the starter, to actually starting the engine, and everything in between.

However, the part that interested me was the key. It did not look like the standard doudle wafer type key that my parents have, but more like an uncut key, with the cuts made in the side. It was like a jagged groove running down the side of the key

I was wondering if this is the infamous "laser key" i keep hearing about, or if it is something different. I was also wondering how this type of lock works. please give any information you have, and thanks in advance.

Your worst fears are confirmed. ;) That key, (if I remember the commercial correctly) is what is properly known as an internal four-track key. The wafers are split in half, and they have "flags" which ride on the inside groove of the key from both directions.

If you ever see one of these types of locks (found in many expensive vehicles such as Acura, Mercedes, Cadillac, etc.) keep your picks and pickgun in your pocket. These wafers are extremely fragile and can be easily bent broken by inserting objects other than the correct key. Even a "key blank" can damage the lock severely. 8)

Oh, i have no intention of actually trying to pick one, i can't even pick a doorknob lock with 3 pins in it :D . I was just curious, but thanks for the info. I figure that asking questions is the only was i will learn. Thanks again

Varjeal, is that the same kind of key found on the 3 series BMW's? I have an 'old' lock set at work (from a vehicle which was struck by lightning - I know, hard to believe, but this vehicle had to have everything changed) which I haven't had the heart to attack yet - mainly from fear of b*ggering it up!
Image If it ain't broke.....pull it down and see how it works anyway!

Quite possibly. There are a couple types of these high security locks. One is the internal four track, and there is also an external two track that is the reverse.
