When it comes down to it there is nothing better than manual tools for your Lock pick Set, whether they be retail, homebrew, macgyver style. DIY'ers look here.

Nice one Bonuts, just check this. They seem very cool to hide things.

yeah, I looked at those when I was thinking about making mine. They are definitely nice looking, but there is something appealing about the homebrew version. I plan to make another one with the book "Fight Club", because its such a good book and it would be totally sweet to hide my picks in a book of that caliper. Like I said, if anybody wants to know how to make one I'll write up a little guide, making the guide would be a good excuse to make my fight club cutout.

I did it manually and found it very helpful to punch the holes first (ruler+needle+hammer), then do the stitches. I started with a small case for 6 picks. Liked it very much, but then I needed one for 16 picks. Very helpful to see all picks at once: Same thing closed: Then my pick set was still growing and I gave up and bought a small camera bag. @Geek142: Why do some of your picks have holes?
Wow, I love the big one, Mind if I copy it?

Yes, it doesn't seem hard but a guide would be nice.

I made a case today for my SO picks. I wasn't a fan of the leather and sorting through, so I designed my own on AutoCAD (which by the way, if you want the plans, I'd bemore then happy to email them to you.
Here are the pictures, made out of denim, the white lines you see are pencil crayon, they will rub right off.

hey Bonuts, how long did it take you to cut that book, and what is the best method?

Next time you pay a visit to the dollar store, look for this case. I bought this for $1.06 after trying forever to make a decent case myself. Save some time and money if you want .

It took me about 6 hours to cut the pages, and about another 6 to glue them. Since I have yet to get the book I wanted to cut up, I'll just post how I did it.
First I selected the start and end point for the cavity, you want the depth to be right for the application obviously, and you dont want to hit the front or back cover. I left about .25" on top and bottom. Then you choose the length and width of the cut, I left 1.25" on all sides. Mark the top page with a pencil and score along the line with a razor blade, try not to cut too many pages at one time or you'll mess up, I did about 5 pages at a time, the cutting of pages will leave marks on the pages below (where the blade cut deeper in sections) use those markings to guide your next cuts. Measure the cuts occasionally to make sure you stay on target.
It is important when cutting to make sure the spine is straight, otherwise the pages will not be aligned correctly.
Once you get close to the desired stop page you will want to put some of the cut pages in as a buffer so you dont accedentally cut the stop page. Then you can shave the edges of the cuts to clean them up and make sure they are mostly inline with the pages above and below it... the more time you put into it the better it will look.
Next up you should get a package of glue sticks, I went through 3 of them, so it would behoove you to buy more than one. Starting about 15 pages back from the end of the cut I applied glue to the top of a page then carefully closed the book and squeezed it hard, continue this until you have applied glue to each page. You don't want to do this too rapidly, as the pages will get bubbles if you rush it, and once a bubble propagates through a few pages you will notice it and it will be too late to fix it. So don't rush, and make sure to align the pages well.
After doing 50pages or so I would stop for the day and leave the book sitting under something heavy (I used an old computer) to maintain compression and let the pages dry.
Mine isn't perfect, but it looks convincing enough. Good luck, and post pictures if you try it.

using some info from this thread, i made a case out of canvas and black elastic webbing-type material. haven't sewed in over a decade, so it came out a little banged up, but it fits my needs perfectly.
with a deck of cards for size comparison
From left to right...
-various tension wrenches
-long rake (skeletonized)
-"m" or "w" rake
-large half diamond, skeletonized
-small version of above
(empty)
- various bogota style picks in various stages of production
- broken key extractors made from thin, fine tooth saw stock (these are short, but pulled up for display)
-small hook
-large hook
-ball
-$4 flat LED light, 20 hour run time per battery
(all the picks were from southord)
the elastic webbing allows for one pick to be held per pocket, or many picks to be held on top of each other to make room as the set grows.
the chalk marks were to layout the vague locations for the pockets.
flap folded over the top
Rolled up, cards show length
rolled up, cards show diameter.
thanks for the tips!
cheers

Depending on who's going to see the case, I've found it signifigantly easier to make cases out of duct tape, sewing pockets in with dental floss.
true, it is crude, but for the stuff that sits in the back of my truck (spare equipment) and the stuff that I want to organize on the home workbench, it does the job in a quick, cheap and efficient manner.
keys, we don't need no stinking keys!
