Well here I am! I've always been interested in lockpicking and up until now have only tinkered with slim pieces of metal (as shims) and slim wires to pick locks (padlocks, desk drawers, etc). But now I am going to take the plunge. I have a set of lockpicks on the way and I have a feeling there is no stopping it now.

My first "pick" set should arrive tomorrow (and I must admit I am pretty excited), so now I just need to find some practice locks. I have a few padlocks, but I may have to make a run to the hardware store.

So far I have REALLY enjoyed the information on the site... I am ready and eager to learn, so please feel free to pass on whatever tips or info you have.

well, first i'd like to say that i just got hired today as (for lack of a better term) a locksmith apprentice. i'm transitioning into this field from being a computer hardware/software geek for just over 25 years.

i would also like to say that i'm certain that you folks here at LP101 helped me get this job. (i applied and then did a lot of research here while i was waiting for the interview and my [now] boss was impressed with the fact that i knew at least a little something when i interviewed.) so, for that, i thank you all doubly.

i live in central pa, usa and i've always had a "passing interest" in locks and puzzles, so i think this job is going to be the start of something pretty darned cool. i know i've got a long way to go, but "a trip of a thousand miles..."

Hello Folks,
Finally got registered on here. I've been working as a Locksmith for about 16 months now and Totally enjoy it,(except for the on-call part). The most enjoyable part of this job is knowing each call is going to be completely different from the others. Be it car openings, house openings or repair/replacement/installation of locksets for residential/commercial. Am also working on learning safe openings which I really enjoy even though there are not many opportunities in my small city. Being a locksmith is very rewarding, never boring, and a constant learning process. I just hand picked an old 5- pin Corbin mortise cylinder with the ball bearings under the bottom pins and darn near wet my shorts. Anyways, am looking forward to learning more from the experts here..

Hi there!....it's a great site with plenty of info so I hope to be coming here a lot, I did a 5 day course a while back and after reading what you guys have said I know they skimped on some major details, so I have now booked on a 2 day course to try and remedy some of these details they should have shown me in the first place, my first post and I'm moaning all ready lol! Whats up? I've been reading through your forums for about a month or two, and have just now decided to actually sign up and become a little more active. I have always had a slight curiosity about lock picking, and recently decided to buy a 5 piece pick set from southord to try on an old ABUS No 41 45mm (key is long gone). Took me about 10-15 tries to finally get the darn thing open, but I have managed to pick it! Another experience I had was that about 2 weeks ago my college's computer lab (where I work) was having problems with one of their computers and needed to get it fixed. I dont know if any of you are familiar with MAC G4's, but on the back they have a special bar that you can attach a padlock to to prevent opening of the case. After looking at the lock, I though it was a very complex lock, when in reality it was just a simple warded padlock. After purchasing a warded pick set, I had the lock off in under 10 minutes. Now I'm looking all over for legitimate locks I can pick just for the fun of it (and for the experience), becuase one day I hope to become certified and possibly run a small business on the side doing lockout work.
