New York City?

Looking to join a locksport group in your local area or start one? Trying to find a meeting or meetup? Look no further.

New York City?

Postby vjbeau » 4 Mar 2006 0:18

Would really like to join or start a NYC club. I'd like to at least meet some interested folks in this sport so we can discuss and pick.

I think NY is one of those places where possessing the tools is illegal and the police might not understand.

I'm a Ham Radio Operator and have been approached and questioned many times in regards to my Motorola handheld radios and even though I produce an FCC license they still have no clue what it is.

So anyway...please..NY'ers with this hobby..let's get together.
I'll show you my locks if I can see yours!

Maybe this is the reason

Perhaps you're right Shrub but I didn't plan on advertising and having meetings in hotel lounges. I love the hobby and thought it would be cool to have a few friends to swap locks, tips etc every now and then.

Oh well. Maybe I should start going to my old magician club meetings. It's been years but escapology is one of their interests. That's how I got started out.

The invitation is still out there for those lonely closeted hobbyists.

This is a great site. I don't feel so alone here. Guess I'll keep coming back.

Thanks for the reply.

By all means keep coming back, you will find the more posts you get and the more knowledge you aqquire and the more envolved you get there may be some that will get back to you for a meet up, its very hard to meet up with someone so new that cant be fathomed out very well due to a low post count especially in a city where lockpicks are not allowed.

Hang around, youll learn lots, you will meet new people and i do know there are mebers form your city so maybe a few more posts down the line you may get some responce, bump the thread in a few months

I'm in NY too, the state not the city. I looked up the NYS penal code and it's only illegal to have lockpicks with intent to burglar...if that's even a verb.

I carry around a printed quote from the code when I have picks not in my residence. I figure if I ever got stopped while driving and for some reason a cop sees the picks, I can take out the quote and say that I'm perfectly within my legal limit.

I think there's a post with it in here somewhere. Faq section I think.

New York State laws don't usually apply to NYC. It's as though we were a seperate State. Like gun laws for instance... A NYS permit or license to carry a handgun becomes void when entering any of the five boroughs and if caught, I would be charged of illegal possesion like a common criminal.

I too have read the laws concerning picks and NYC is different than NYS. Go figure!

Which license are you referring to? I hold the ' General radiotelephone operator license, with the ship radar endorsement. '

This license allows the user to maintain, and repair all transmitters included in the endorsement section. This is a technician license, even though it really doesn't sound like it.

Since the FCC de-regulated AM back in 1985, I really don't think anyone really understands what that body stands for anymore. :?:

WHOA!!!! The police hassle you over having a handheld radio?!?!!?

I'm a ham operator as well, General Class, and that sounds really screwy to me. What could a little 2 meter rig be mistaken for that would be illegal?! A scanner? I've never heard of scanners being illegal anywhere in the U.S., so that doesn't sound right. What did they say to you? Were they at least respectful? You weren't arrested just because they were stupid and didn't know what it was, were you?

Oh, and to the best of my knowledge picks are legal in NYC, just keep them at home and don't carry them. I believe that a video of one of the DEFCONs (or some such thing) where they were doing a lockpicking demo was in NYC, and one of the demonstraters specifically stated that picks were legal in NYC, and he even pulled some picks he was carrying out of his pocket, showed them, and stated that he was NOT a licensed anything (locksmith, repo guy, LEO, car mechanic, etc.).

I really would think that the legal thread would have something on NYC--go check that.

I really don't want to go off topic here but you can try this at home. Ask police you meet if they know what a ham radio or amateur radio is. Most don't know. Most also think listening to police freqs on scanners are illegal.
Remember this is the post 9/11 NY.

My original post in this thread is for wanting to meet other ny'ers that may be interested in getting together and forming a club and to trade knowledge and basically have fun with our hobby. The invitation still stands if there are any out there and I'm sure I'm not alone. BTW...just got my Foley-Belsaw kit and ID card. Fun fun Fun.

Most scanners can't pick up most major PD radios now anyways because of digital trunking and some other stuff I've forgotten. I know NOPD (New Orleans) has a new radio system now that allegedly is impossible (read: very difficult, but anythings doable  ) to monitor, and I'm sure NYPD has a very sophisticated system, so that's really stupid that they would not only not know the laws of their own state but also think that their radios could be picked up by any off the shelf radio shack POS scanner...AND then they don't recognize your FCC license, which is a Federal document?? God, I've heard some bad stuff about NYPD, this is just one more...

NYPD is the best in the country. Cops can't know everything. What do you expect for a starting salary of 25K ? I wouldn't do it! Gotta remember that 9-11 happened here, hence the paranoia.

OK back to lock clubs.....anyone here in NYC that wants to start a monthly pick pack? I won't ask anymore. I just got a set of bump keys so i'm outta here to practice to not hit my fingers....

It's a young hobby, and there really aren't a lot of groups out there just yet. Bad news: it's very hard to find a club that's already running in your city (or most cities for that matter). Good news: There is always an opportunity to start something really cool, that will hopefully live on long after you've set down your own picks.

So what am I saying? You could always thing about starting your own locksport group! There are a lot of resources available. See www.locksport.com

Cheers!
