Help and Advice?

Hi all

Glad I found this Forum!!

I am looking for a career change and after my Grandparents were ripped off by a locksmith I have decided to go into this unknown area to do things right.

Does anyone know of an honest - place to train to become a lock smith (Security Specialsit) Near Bristol Or in The south East? I will have to take time off from work to attend to these would be bst suited.

The more i look into this the more confused im becoming about the right price to pay for training time, what you should cover etc.

I am looking to become a self employed locksmith helping people get into their homes/cars and fitting locks to start off with and to gain as much experience and skill in this as possible before even thinking about something else.

Is it true it would cost at least 6-10000 to get started with all the tools you need etc?

I have found a 5 day course for £1700 and time is running out!!

Any advice or general info about starting this and making a living i would be most greatful.

Thanks all

yes its true that without £5000 to £10,000 to get up running it is doubtfull that you will survive the 1st 6 months, sad but true.
though looking at what you want to do, to get into cars properly you can treble or quadrupal this, and you wont learn it in 5 days.
best to start realisticaly on domestic commercial opening or cars, not both, all you will be trained in is the methods of entry, you will be no where near competent enough to set up and make a living, this will take alot of time and practice, and even then the odds of success and even survival are heavily stacked against you.

the reason people like your family get ripped off by locksmiths is that they havnt used a locksmith, but probably an undertrained underequipped and under stocked locksmith wannabe off of a short course, a guy who thinks its normal to trash locks and charge high for the pleasure.

your reasons for wanting to enter the industry and do it right are admirable, but are they the right reasons, do you have a passion for locks, do you want it for the right reasons ? you will believe the start up costs or you wont, but i promise you 9 out of 10 guys trained do not even set up let alone survive in an overpopulated market.
