Hello,
I have begun to notice on more and more vending machines there are a diffrent style of lock, they are not a tubular or van lock, that much i can tell you. They appear to be a pin tumbler, maybe a triple bitted one. All i can say is they are the same size as a tubular but the face resembles a lighting bolt in a way. Anybody know what im talking about? Any information would be appreciated. Thanks alot.

If the front of the lock resembles a lighning bolt i would probably think this was a warded lock, need more info on it though, like does the front of the keyhole spin around freely if it does then I'd more than likly sy it is a warded lock

I can't imagine why you'd lock a vending machine (contains lots of money and merchandise) with a warded lock (to the best of my knowledge, less secure than using a shoelace to tie it shut).

no i cant imagine either as they are very insecure but the lock that came to mind was a master warded lock with the lightning bolt key hole. unless the vending machine just has a sort of swing around clasp with a place to put a padlock to secure it and the owner just chose a warded one. but usually it would just be a tubular lock.

i have also seen new vending machine locks. They are not like descibed above, they are more of a half circle, as in the key would need a profile (i think thats the word, i mean looking from the front edge) almost like a C. It also looks like a wafer lock as the multiple C's are not lined up. Have you ever seen this? I am going to try to get a picture when i go back to skool.

Its a lever tumbler. Seems to be the same make as on payphones. The face does not spin freely, they have about eight tumblers. As well as having a sliding mechanism to prevent access to the tumblers unless the lower piece of the key is inserted all the way into the lock. This should be shown by a rectangular cut near the bottom. Though the top is often identical. The cuts in the key go right through the warding, unlike most pin tumbler locks.
The C-shape, it's from a manufacturer called Abloy. They are based in Austrailia. These locks are tougher than medecos. American vendors are starting to switch out relatively insecure Ace II with these.

Just to set things straight before we have a war here, Abloy is based in Finland, with offices spanning the globe. About the claim that Abloy locks are tougher than Medeco, I know of people who pick Abloy classics as a matter of routine, but I dont know of anyone who picks say, 4 or 5 pin medecos very often.

On the topic of vending machine locks, I saw one with a lock that looked like an "L". What kind of lock is that?

Could you be more specific in your decription, maby a photo please? Sounds as though it may be a custom keyway lock of some kind, but it could be alot of things.

I've looked online and cant find a pictures of the lock I saw, but the lock itself was not the shape of an "L". It was the key hole that was an "L" shape(so the key would be an "L" as well to fit it). This was an installed lock not a pad lock.

Abloy's website is based in austrailia. Their representatives have austrailian offices, and their website's multimedia is all telling me that their hq is there. Then again they were invented in Helsinki.. Abloy classics(1907)are commonly picked but what about the porfile (1977) or the more secure disc lock pro(1985) or the exponentially more secure as good as it gets exec(1993). I keep on hearing about classics being picked or I heard a guy that knows a guy in sewden that picked a profile. And once I saw a news articke about a pro being picked but reading on I saw that it was drilled through.
Anyway the L shape isnt a new abloy as far as abloy says.
