European locks

Postby 7-uP » 29 Mar 2006 13:31

I have a question before I buy my first set.. Im gonna buy a standard set of picks (MPXS-14), but since I am from Europe i wonder if they will have any problems opening European locks?

I have no experience with European keyways but I believe that most people recomend slimline picks for them.

Only problem with them is that if you are heavy handed they will bend/break easier than the standard set.

I have read that slimline picks will work on European and American locks if you are gentle but standard picks are too big for some European keyways.

Maybe someone with more experience with both types of picks can give you a better answer.

In the mean time search the site there are lots and lots of posts with the "Are these the right picks for me" topic already. :)
If all else fails, change your syntax and search again.

Yes.

Take a look around the forum for slimline picks. European locks tend to have a keyway more narrow than the locks in the US. The pickset you want to buy is designed for american locks. It is possible to pick most european and japaneese locks with a standard american pick, but it is harder and more rough on both the lock and the pick.

This is, more or less, the equivelent of what you wanted to buy, but for european locks:

A good idea would be to practise first with a homebrewed pick, so that when you buy a set you'll have some practise with the amount of force you need to apply with a pick so as not to bend or brake it.
