An old refurbed machine would likely be plenty of computing power for a dedicated task like this. You can pick those up for almost nothing, I just traded half a dozen pentium 133 - amd 350's for a lunch each.

Windows 98 would be fine as well, you won't need the extra overhead of 2k/xp, and you wouldn't benifit much from them anyway.

No need to spend the extra dollars no wasted computer cycles. If the old system was slow, I highly doubt it was the computer speed, I would suspect it was a limitation of the machines, or the programming.

I'm surprised that nobody has mentioned a King & Queen set. This would be the perfect vehicle to mass produce EXACT replicas from the templates posted on the site earlier. I know I would be willing to pay a few bucks a piece...

I'm looking forward to playing with this and seeing if it's a viable thing.... see if I can get a couple of people to throw together to get some "toys" made.

Mind you I'm terrified to see what the price would be to have a small run of stuff made.

They would have no idea, if it was a custom rifle design. Now, if you were making a *barrel* they would know...

The gold pick handles idea is a great one, the ideal present! Might be a bit heavy for everyday use, though, and even 14C is going to mark if it isn't kept apart from things that will ding the handles. For the rivets, can't you simply use a different grade of gold (harder 9C) and punch it, then polish it smooth? Or perhaps copper, as the contrast would be lovely, and the copper alloy could be a bit harder.

As for emachineshop, or whoever you are talking about, they tend to be horridly expensive for a lot of things, and, despite the idea being that they are great for quick cheap prototypes, they are nothing like cheap for a one-off design.
