What brand electirc pick would you suggest?

Postby Olcaytug » 16 Mar 2006 12:34

I'm considering to buy one but can not decide what model/brand.

Also, will they be ok for keys with security pins? Are pick guns more durable? Should I consider pick guns?

Regards And Thankkkkssssss!

Definitely learn to use a pick gun before making the leap to electric. Also be warned, pick guns cause a little pin damage and electric pics can really tear up a lock. The steel used in a pick gun or electric pick is often harder than the brass pins so the impact can dent a pin to the point where the original key will no longer open a lock. This has never happened to me, but it is possible.

If you can afford it go for the Wendt! Its a little gentler on the pinsand seems to coax the security pins to set a little easier.

The HPC is good, a little more rustic it really hammers the pins so you can often see the brass residue trickle from the keyway on a sustained burst.

Its a matter of price really, can you earn the money back, if you are a hobbyist then stick with the cheaper models.

Make sure you get extra needles, you will break at least a couple in the first few weeks. Dont be tempted to mess with the factory setting when it arrives, its usually about right, a lesson I learnt from my own mistake. 8)

wendt wins everytime.
Had a go at the multipick all singing and dancing gun at the last meet up and wasnt that impressed with it, maybe it needs the expensive control box to really get the best from it.

Ive been using the HPC with the Wendt blades for a while now and so far it has only let me down once on the job. Ive had no trouble opening Yale, Union, ERA, Assec, etc. etc. etc. but it didn't like the X5 at all. At home on the bench though ive got a good selection of high security cylinders that its had no success on what so ever.

So i have been considering getting the Wendt gun. I have two reservations. Firstly the price, its an expensive piece of kit but i am sure that it is a worthwhile investment in the long term. Secondly is the build quality. I've read so many posts and heard of a lot of problems with the Wendt from dodgy batteries to bits falling off, and for the price it is these problems seem far to frequent.

So for me the jury is still out :?

Cheers
Steve

I don't know about the wendt, I had heard a lot of good things about it but then Shrub gave it a go and really didn't think very much of it at all, and I know that he knows his stuff, sooo...?

Well the wendt is used by most pros in to NDE and have no promblems with it, its supposed to be a great tool and very effective.

On a personal note, i didnt like the build quality and found it to be very poor and somewhat lacking in design in one or two certain areas then theres the fact that it broke before it even met a lock in anger.

If you have to save up for it dont buy the wendt but if you feel you have to have one then so be it.

I dont use a pick gun and normally use hand picks on occasion i will get the manual one out to losen pins in a lock but thats it, thats not to say i havent got plans for a home made one, there is also an update coming for the latest bosch screwdriver the ixo, it will be a lot better than the old guide and will give you a professional product, i may also sell this conversion for you to add to your own screwdriver

Get yourself to a show or meeting and just have a play with the various ones around, the only thing that puts the wendt above the others is that it has a bit more power to it but all that does is detroy the lock quicker.

Also, might I suggest if you are going for the more economical approach to order from the site sponser, http://www.lockpickshope.com and use the 10% with the code 'lp101'. Im sure this would cover shipping, or a good portion of it.

Good luck and post your results and/or descision! :D
