How to Make Home Made Plastic Pick Handle by Sams Choice

How to Make Home Made Plastic Pick Handle by Sams Choice

Postby sams choice » 30 Mar 2006 17:09

First off, I think this is completely gross. I hate milk so it kinda grosses me out. But the whole thing behend it is that whole improvised thing with making picks and equipment for it. Anyone can make this at their house, and probably will have the materials to do it right after they read this if they wish too. I personally do not like handles on my picks of anykind. Just me and the metel is fine. But for others. Here you go...

Here are the materials you will need - Milk - Vineger - Pan - filter of some sort
Image
Image

Now pour 8oz of milk into the pan and heat up but do NOT BRING TO A BOIL!!! Now add about 2 table spoons of vinegar to the mixture. You will notice curds starting to rise to the top. This is called casein. It is the protein in milk.

Image

Stir until the curds are in tiny little bits all over the top of the pan. It will look like this.

Image

Now pour it into a strainer and pat the excess moisture from it with a paper towel. Once it is less moist you should be able to easily pick it off and put it into a hunk.

Image
Image

Now get all the moisture out of it you can with paper towels. Then press it with your thumbs and fingers like you would dough, and make it consistant. If it is stringy and falls apart you put too much vinegar. Just microwave it for 5 seconds and do it somemore. When it has the consistancy of dough, it is ready. I like to add food coloring to it at this point. Pink is good right?

Image

Now that you have it just put the pick in there and size it to your desire. Let it dry over night and in the morning. Bam instant durable, plastic milk handle. You can also smooth it out with sand paper too.

Now there's a pick my girlfriend will even use!!! (pardon sexist comment)

Here is one I just wrapped really nasty like just because. It is comfortable though.

A while back ago this is how plastics and glue were made. Today Elmer's brand glue is made in a similar way. This is why it is non-toxic and biodegradable.

Note* you can use this plastic for anything. It works just like plastic. Just have to be creative and figure out a way to make it fit what you want. Microwave for best qaulity. It can be melted down and put into a mold also. alright enjoy, hope this will make some fun for someone! Let me know what you guys think, and if you are going try this little silly experiment. It works is all that matters right?

Wow, full credit for this - I wouldn't have thought of it to be honest. :)

It's so weird, yet functional I'll give it a go - mind if I post up some results on this thread?

Now this deserves a sticky in my opinnion :)

IMPORTANT!!!! use another piece of metel...NOT THE ACTUAL PICK!!!! IT will rust the pick!!!! This is fine if you plan on permanently leaving the pick in the holder, but other wise will really upset you to see!!!! i forgot to add that!!!! alright all done!!!

How did you get that idea? I never knew milk could be used that way.... Does that smell at all? seems like it would smell like rotten milk.

i dont remember where i got this idea from honestly. It is a little kids science experiment. It does not smell ever. The milk is not rotton just warmed. The milk fat whey is what makes milk stink and you throw that way. It does smell like vinegar before it drys but once it does it does not smell any more. to make it really good 8oz milk 2 table spoons vinegar, use white vinegar.

ironically... I watch Iron Chef sometimes and they had a milk battle.

One of the chefs did something similar... using vinegar to cause milk to curdle is actually a way to make improvised cheese.

i think it might smell like catfish bait soon  :D

I gave it a go using red vinegar since it's all I had, and it didn't come out too great - I'll give it a go later with white vinegar.

Would I be right in saying that the handles would be biodegradeable ?

they would be biodegradable but in 10 years i think? it could take up to 24 hours to dry. The pink one i made is still not done, but the white one is almost dried. you can also melt it down and wrappe it in plastic wrap to make shape.

if you are worried about the handles falling apart because they are biodegradable, that is not a problem. Wood is biodegradable too. here is a link that shows another way of doing it. Maybe mine was not to distinct.

Ha, My wife thinks all of us are weird. She is amazed that there is this little community of people who are brought together by the joy of locks and picking them.

The Sanskrit word for war means "desire for more cows."

There are more plastic flamingos in America than real ones.

Well, I've certainly learnt something today! :P

Sounds cool, I'll have to get some white vinegar soon. :)
