The Masterlock No. 576

I was in the hardware store yesterday and I picked one of these up. I only had 3 locks to pick before I got this one (one kwikset deadbolt, one masterlock combo with the tiny keyhole in the back, and one generic padlock I got from CVS for 5 bucks). I get it home and look it up on here and I read that it has security pins and is giving newer guys (me) trouble. Great.

5 minutes later I have it open. Over the course of the night's on-off picking, I got it twice more. My question is regarding it's cylinder. It looks like it can be removed. I don't have a camera available right now, but I'll try and describe it and if anyone's got one they can photo and post that would be great.

They cylinder is that sort of double-ball shape (one being the main cylinder, and the other smaller ball being the pin housing). There are also 3 holes on various sides of the lock. There is a small one on the bottom near the cylinder that seems to go most of the way through the lock, another one of the same size on another side, that leads directly into the hole the arm goes into when locked. A third hole is larger, and seems to be plugged with a different type of metal.

What are those holes, and can I remove the cylinder? Does anyone know?

No i have been wondering that also but i know you cant take out the cylinder out of the lock but i looks like you can

how do they keep it in?, they had to put it in last or something, how did they lock it in? glue? it has to come out somehow

That seems like an interchangeable core.s to how it comes out I couldn't say, although I think I remember seing a video recently where a padlock had the ciore removed.

from the looks f my 576 there is a piece on the side of different colored metal that looks like a pressed in pin that holds this core in. From what Ive seen on it you would have to remove this pin to remove the core probably the only way would be to drill the pin out ... something I'm not ready to do at this time as I just bought the lock.

As for the other holes they are for oiling and drainage so that moisture has a way out and oil can be inserted to the inner workings.

Seems like a real roundabout way to change a core.

i have this lock to... i bought a double pack keyed alike, the core can be removed by removing the retaining pin... the off colored piece, my buddy super glued a metal peice to it and yanked it out he says.. i havent seen it so i dont know if this is plausable. But indeed my drilling out the retaing pin you can remove the cylinder. I got mine out and it makes a wonderful cut away, you can see the security pins in action and everything. i would suggest getting a very strong drill bit..what they use to drill safes with becuase i friend about 3 of my black and deckers getting it out good luck fellas.

Hmm, if superglue and drilling are the only ways I'll probably buy another to open up.

I could make it my first cutaway.
