Iraq Prison lock

Information about locks themselves. Questions, tips and lock diagram information should be posted here.

Okay, just runned off and grabbed it. It is made by England Security, model name looks like "TOPPADLOCK," you can see the branding as a green streak on the left side of the lock in the picture. It has a four sided key about 5mm in width and uses a spring loaded locking dog. Any more questions let me know, I have a digital camera but after 1100 posts have no idea how to host pics on the site, I'll have to look into that real quick.

It is a basic padlock, except that it has a cross shaped key with four bitting edges. I even asked about it in another thread. My sis brought it back from Iraq for me as a souvenier. All in all a decent lock.

Crucifrom lock it would seem. :)

Could range from mildly challenging to very, very difficult depending on how well made it is, and how many pins there are.

It would seem like a nightmare to pick with improvised tools that are available in a prison :?

It'd be nasty with the right tools - it'd be another story if you had to get McGuyver on it...

I guess when it is between death and picking a cruiciform lock with scraps of plastic/metal, the pick-fu instinct definetly prevails.

My guess would be the lock is poorly made. On one axis of my key, the bitting is inverse of it's opposite side - I'm thinking it's a wafer lock combined with a double pin tumbler. I haven't tried to pick it yet because getting tension on the thing is too hard - if I had a wishbone tensioner I might be able to pull it off, though I'd have to file the ends down a bit..
