If you break a key in a lock you are in trouble since you have nothing to pull the bit stuck in out with.

A broken key extractor grips the broken key and pull it out of the lock.

You can buy sets of them, or flatten out a fishing hook (thanks to the person who suggested this before), and insert so the barbed part goes in first and grips the key.

This explanation sucks slightly, but hopefuly it'll be on help. :)

You can also use paperclips, like shown in the pic, they work!
Well the first one anyway,
The other one is a little bit thicker, it might work on car keys  (advanced)

Here´s how:
Take a paperclip and unfold it, now take a wire cutter, and lightly bite the paperclip like seen on the pic, and your done! Almost, cuz you will probably have to hit it a few times on the sides, to make thin enough, but now your done, happy extracting
Before you pick a lock:
The first thing that you should do is check to make sure that
the lock is your's and secondly make sure its not in use.
