Chubb 3G114 make up kit

Postby whitelever » 10 Apr 2006 14:32

I ve just brought a RBL Chubb 3G114 make up kit at the telford show but find the intructions very poor.

I was told at the show it would also do the Chubb 3G114E locks? but I find the impressions very poor.

The instructions state when taking a reading the key should be turned in the unlocking direction, where as I always thought you have to take the reading from the back end of the levers (this is not possible on the 3G114E)

Does anyone have any experiance of using this device?

It really is just a make up key and is not really going to help you pick these things. For that you need the Safe Ventures 114 kit. I witnessed a demo from RB and also a demo of one of their staff trying to show me how to pick a union with one of their curtain picks (the lock was already open and he was struggling to open it) .. I dont think they had the best staff there to assist people with the sale of their products to be honest ..

In any event, check out the other threads on here about the SF 114 pick which will guide you about the impressions that you see and how to interpret them , the old 114 will give 3 clear marks but the new one possibly only 2 and it will take you a long time to find out the correct combination from that without a pin and cam ..

you are correct about reverse readings of the levers ...

I got one of these kits thinking I could get into the chubb 'on the cheap!' Doh!
The sales bumph makes it out to be a decoder/pick

Its a great bit of machining, works a treat as a make up key but a very time consuming decoder.

I use the reader keys in my pin and cam kit, unfortunately the nice pin set now sits in my 'sin' tool box.

Sure you could sell it on the site and put money into a pin and cam

congratulations you bought a 1st class make up key for key cutting, sadly you now need a decoder to pick it.
RB marketing in fairness can make you think you are buying a pick, sadly not though, unless you run the 54 or more different keys from the impression of the old lock.

Thanks for the advice guys

I read somewhere on this site about a Chubb decoder and using a curtain breaker to read the levers from the back end.

I know this is not 100% NDE but does anyone know where I could get one? as it appears I may have just wasted my money if I can't use it.

it will be pointless making a curtain breaker to work with your kit, as at the very best you will be able to narrow it down with an impression to;

old lock 81 possible keys
114e lock 375 possible keys

it would be more time consuming than picking it with 2 wires.

The rb kit works well as a make up key to cut from only and not as a pick or decoder, you can cut a perfect key from it is all.

what you now need is the safeventures decoder to go with it.

a curtain breaker is no more than a cut down key blank, but beware if used incorrectly it can damage curtain beyond use, with the chubb pin and cam most of us dont bother with the impression and work it as a true pin and cam thus retaining the locks BS rating.

if you get lucky and have 3 x No 1 or 2 levers in the new lock then you could get it down to 24 possible keys on old lock, but will still take time to run the combinations, but on the E series lock it will take you all day as you only get 2 different readings.

for what you paid for this kit , you could have bought a 2nd hand pin and cam when they occasionaly pop up.

hindsight is a wonderfull thing i know, what your rb kit will do for you is allow you to rekey chubbs , so may yet pay for itself.
