Are there any spools in an Abus 65/45 Padlock?

Postby UnLock » 3 Mar 2004 20:16

Hello all,

I've been asking my friends for any locks they don't use/need anymore so I can practice on. One friend gave me an Abus 65/45 and I haven't been able to pick it yet. At first I tried single picking it but when that failed, I tried to rake it just to make sure it would open. Well it hasn't yet. The lock is in great shape and the keyway is clear of dirt and seems to turn a bit when I apply tension and rake. As far as I can tell 3 pins seem to be setting. He gave me the lock but no key so I can't verify that it actually is in working order but I imagine it is.

Does anyone know if this particular model has spools? I've tried searching the net and this forum but can't get the info on this model.

Any help will be much appreciated as always. Thanks

I always assume Abus locks have spool pins when I pick them. I recommend you do the same.

LOL...Thanks Chucklz...I figured you'd be the first to reply. :D As soon as I saw the ABUS name on the lock I did assume there were spools. Then I thought perhaps this may be one of their cheaper models and they don't have any spools. Oh well, I'll just keep trying.

I've asked my friend to look for the key if he can. Not that it'll make a difference but at least I'll know the lock is functioning properly and can be opened. :)

Try reverse picking, its helped me a few times in the past. Lift up all the pins, all the way up with the back of a pick, then apply heavy tension to keep them all false set. Slowly reduce tension, so that hopefully, the bottom pins drop down, catching the nasty spool pins at the shear line, instead of in the spool.

Thanks for the tip Chucklz. I'll have to try that and hopefully it'll work. I think I may need to make a stronger tension wrench. On some locks that are older, I've had to apply quite a bit of tension which starts to bend the wrenches I have. Any recommendations? I'm thinking about taking a very small slot-type screwdriver and bending it 90* (with the help of a torch). This would be small enough to fit in the keyway and stronger than my current wrenches.

I'm still learning but I'll get there! Actually...where is "there"? I don't think there is a point where one finally knows everything about lock picking! Oh well, it'll be fun trying. :D

I really need to get a grinder. Never had a need for one until now...will have to try and make some custom picks as well.

Ive always used fairly "flimsy" tension wrenches to do the picking, and if a lock needs alot more force to open, I have a ground down screwdriver at 90 degrees that I use.

For a reasonably inexpensive grinder. Check out Harbor Freight.

Hello Chucklz,

I borrowed my friends grinder and ground 2 hex keys today. They provide much more strength which will come in handy for those stiffer locks. I think I'll definitely buy a grinder and start making my own pics as well. I'll look into that model you specified.

Marso,

Thank you very much for providing me that link. I was using the address of www.abus.com and couldn't find any specific info of the locks on their site. No wonder I was/am having a hard time opening that lock. It's the 40mm model which does contain spools...darn :( At least I have a difficult lock to practice on in the future. Actually, I'm still going to keep trying.

On a good note, my friend was able to find the key and the lock works great :) Now I know the problem is me!

Btw if the text I quoted is correct they are infact "Anti-pick mushroom pins". Yes it sounds like a great lock to work up to. Give me now ;) Best of luck and keep me posted.
