Warrant Work - Advise

Postby Malc » 11 Apr 2006 8:40

I've been called a few times over the last week or from a reputable UK based company who have warrant contracts for warrant work in my part of the country ( south - UK )

Are there any guys out there who can give me advise on warrant work in general. I'd like to know the pro's and con's before committing to the work.

Is it a lot of hassle ? in most cases are people in or out ? etc etc. I also don't particulary like the idea of being "The Key Holder " who then has to arrange delivery of the keys and take the payment if the locks need changing.

cheers

The best advice you can get is whether the company is reputable or not, whos approched you?

It all comes down to whether you are expected to drill the locks or pick them, drilling locks is not a reputable firm picking locks needs the associated practise and tools.

Can you deal with a 110 on the door in good time?, can you deal with opening doors the customer doesnt want you to open? etc etc.

The company are Premier 24 Locksmith. They really require locks to be picked where possible or drill/pick method. Your comment about dealing with a 110 is interesting. It is a lock I tend to shy away from at the moment but obviously wish to be able to tackle. Any tips on the 110 for me ?

I do have the Mortice LockTemplate Kit ( with the L tools for lifting levers )

most warrant companies insist upon a minimum of 95% non destructive entry, and allow you a maximum of 15 minutes a door, a mean feat when faced with a chubb cruiser and 110 on a commercial premises.

if you drill too many you will be binned, if you are longer than 15 minutes a door you will be binned , if you dont back your rep up when it turns ugly you get binned.

warrants are about quick non destructive entry, leaving a BS lock intact with its BS rating intact, which means no holes not even 2mm, some non reputable companies accept drilling the lock as standard, the majority now dont.

on a warrant run of 10 jobs id expect to open on an average day 5 of these, on a gas run of 30 jobs often you must open 20 plus of these, so time is of the essence.
some are in , some are not, the worst is when they come home when you are in their property, so you will get confrontation.
if you drill a lock then you take the keys back on your own when the customer gets home, not a pleasant job especially on your own.

as to advice on warrants, i wouldnt go for it until at least 95% NDE though many do, put in shed loads of practice to become confident of getting into anything including 110 locks inside of 15 minutes, or just try riding your luck.

as to advice with 110, either practice your picking or buy the pin and cam and again practice like hell, the lock can be defeated, but only with practice.

Thanks Pinky, that good advice. I need to really practise my picking skills a little more before comitting to warrant work at the moment ( particularly the 110 )

Id have to mostly agree with our elderly friend mr pink here, other than how many openings a day at the moment we are getting a little bored as on an average day we are only getting perhaps 2 or 3 (used to love the must read days as its down to you how long the day is) on all other points i agree.
Warrants are not everyones cup of tea as you will most certainly encounter some kind of confrontaion at least a few times a week. Not for the faint hearted. Im personally tired of warrants but they pay the bills and definatly keep your hand in picking wise.
Martin i take this 24 premier mob are 24 locks from Wales? Ive only ever done a few jobs for that lot but never had problems with payment.

Not in my case Shaun no but i was taking count of yours on one of those clicker things and youd surpassed that by about 5pm.
Martin, best thing about the must reads is there is no fitter taking 40 mins to fit an etm plus less chance of aggro.
Im serious about the amount of openings though ,one of our lot was also moaning how boring warrants had become the other day.
My question still stands though, who are this lot Malc is talking about?
