Questions about locksmithing

Hi,
I'm very new to lockpicking, but recently the idea of locksmithing is quite appealing to me. What is an average wage/hourly rate for a locksmith. Also what does a locksmith do if they are unable to pick a lock because it is jammed?

As with ANY trading profession, it strongly depends on your area. Perhaps if you fill in your profile to let us know where you are we may be able to give you a better answer.

As said on the other thread he wont be earning anything if going it alone for a couple of years at least and any profit he may make will/should be put straight back intot he business on tools, stock etc

The start up costs alone i should think will make it a no brainer for him.

I'm not from Australia so I can't answer the first question, but the second one is easy.

Also what does a locksmith do if they are unable to pick a lock because it is jammed?

A=Depends on why the lock is "jammed". But the short and sweet answer is: Find away around it or try another door.

A couple other questions would need to be answered as well.

1. What type of locksmith, specialist? (If so, what area) or general?
2. How many years of experience does this locksmith have?
3. What type of economic area does this locksmith work in? Rich metro? Middle-income metro? small town?
4. Working for himself? Someone else?

If I recall correctly from an old LL price average guide for the U.S., the average journeyman locksmith made roughly $17.50/hr.

Assuming you simply want to open locks, and charge lots of money for it, as is the going trend... you have to consider the points already stated above, and just how many other people are doing the same thing in your area.

If there is a lot of established competition, good luck. I hit the jackpot because I'm the only listed locksmith in town, and my competition are all located in neighboring towns-- the nearest being a 30 minute drive away, and the most reliable takes over an hour to get here.

Since I have already established a monopoly in this respect, I'm slowly building towards becoming a full service locksmith and even hired help.
