My First Padlock Cut-Away

Information about locks themselves. Questions, tips and lock diagram information should be posted here.

The lock is a disk lock mechanism.. similar system as Abloy.

I have a Blackspur disk lock that I might turn into a cut-away, if I can get the bloody faceplate off the front. :x

Once again, thanks for all the kind comments. :)

Honestly, I don't think you are qualified to use a dremel.

No, but that is because I couldn't guarantee I'd make a good job of it.

And for the sake of my concience, please be careful when using your Dremel. Take it slow and DON'T TAKE SHORTCUTS!

Dremeal tool safety

Postby CVScam » 24 Apr 2006 19:48

I am sure almost every one knows this but please wear safety glasses when using a Dremeal or any kind of grinder. 35,000 rpm and flying pieces of metal toward your eyes is a bad idea. I always try to use my vice or at least vice grips :) when grinding or cutting. One day I though why not use my cut off wheel and cut most of metal away from the hacksaw blade before I grind it that way I would have a lot less grinding to do. After I broke 2 cut off wheel blades I figured out was not a good idea for me. I also had forgot to heat up the hacksaw blade first to weaken it.

You won't with out breaking it, if you have access to a lathe, you should just drill it out. The faceplate is kept in by a circlip, you will either break the faceplate or bend the clip (so logically drill the face plate until you get to the circlip then remove it and build a new plate)

Nice cutaway Illusion!

'Tis the best cutaway I've seen. It looks less like a cut away and more like a prop from the next Superman movie...
X-ray vision lock prop: Superman sees its a disc lock using his x-ray vision and decides instead of super picking it to super explode it using his super red glowy eye rays, I digress soo smooth and round it is a pice of art. E-bay it as a superman x-ray prop..you'd make a fortune.

Regarding Dremel's and locks/metal cutting... has anyone else experienced the same trouble as I did?

When I took up locks as a hobby I already had a cheap dremel copycat two years old and with the rotary part slightly untrue (wobbly). I did me good work at the beginning but one day after cutting brass and hacksaw blades it went nuts and would only work on highest speed regardless which setting I chose (had a click-slider for 6 speeds=. I figured it had gone the way of all machinery and got a real Dremel.

That Dremel showed exactly the same behaviour after a week. Returned it to the shop, got my replacement and went ahead. The new one went high-speed about 10 days later. I figured something is wrong and the people in the shop would crucify me if I brought another one with the same fault. So I disassembled it and noticed that the plastic piece with the speed selection slider has lots of room between the rest of housing. I figured metal dust could get in there and short-circuit it to highspeed one way or the other so I used a fine brush to clean it out nicely. Worked wonders, it was back to normal function again. I have to do this once in a while, and I wonder if any one else has this problem as well and found a permanent solution?
Due to financial limitations the light at the end of tunnel has been turned off until further notice.

 35,000rpm...That is about ten times the speed of my bench grinder. Must fly through metal like it is nothing.

That is a very nice cutaway and amazing for your first attempt!

Is it possible to do something similar with a pin/tumbler lock? Would the pins fall out?

It is a common problem on poorly designed power tools with adjustable speed.

On some tooling you can simply add a piece of rubber underneath the case but on top of the button so that the dust doesnt get in it, maybe this could be your answer.

The time spent making this thing would have bought me enough time to get a shaman priest imported from a jungle to sprit the lock away. :P
