hacksaw vs bandsaw

When it comes down to it there is nothing better than manual tools for your Lock pick Set, whether they be retail, homebrew, macgyver style. DIY'ers look here.

hacksaw vs bandsaw

Postby audie_murphy43 » 26 Apr 2006 16:37

It seems that either blade would work well, hacksaw and bandsaw. I personally prefer hacksaw. But I want to know what everyone else thinks. And yes...this is my first post...so Im sorry if this is a repeat topic..i did search..but maybe not hard enough.

They are the same really, if you can get hold of a quantity of bandsaw blades then use those its just that hacksaw blades are a better size to work with.

It has been covered before but i admit bandsaw blades aret so readily available to others so its not mentioned anywhere near as much.

I dont think the welcome thread is the place to post such questions by the way :P

I was actually directing him to the place to properly introduce himself.
This was his very first post.

All those Sticky's and Announcements seem to sometimes go unnoticed.

If you decide to try bandsaw blades try your local butcher shops... Many of them (like where I work) toss them out when they are dull. They are slightly wider than a hacksaw blade, but other than that there is virtually no difference. At one point I felt bandsaw blades were more rust resitant, but after using a piece of this metal in a wet environment (for a different pupose) I found it rusted quite readily ;)

band saw

Postby raimundo » 27 Apr 2006 10:16

there is some uneven tempering in the hacksaw blades considering how many different makers there are, but the bandsaw blade has to be tempered very correctly, remember that it has to flex around a couple of wheels constantly. I think that bandsaw blades would be best. rememeber, the teeth are hardened, but the rest of the blade must flex without fracturing. there is even a joinweld that has to go over the wheels constantly. I would believe that the bandsaw has much more careful metalurgy involved in producing it. and it does come in a variety of thicknesses, you must find the right thickness, because it will be a lot of trouble to try to grind a thick on thinner and the product, unless you do it in a machine shop, will probably be uneven, however if you must do that, cut a length of it for a pick, grind off all the teeth, and thin the whole width on a belt sander for the length of the pick tip and shaft, leave the handle portion thick, after thinning the whole width with the sander on both sides, block out the pick shaft and tip from somewhere away from the edges of your blank, as the sander will have thinned these areas more and more unevenly.

I have just received a 12 inch section of bandsaw blade from someone this weekend, and about 20 mins ago I have finished 2 picks from it (half-diamond and hook - similar to the HPC P11 and P10). The material seems to be identical that material used in the HPC picks (thickness <0.022> and flexibility as well as strength and blueing on the finish), It was a 1/4 inch blade with teeth and with teach removed it is a tiny bit wider than 3/16ths - I think next time I grind down the teeth I will leave a bit more material, in hopes the minor ridges left behind where the teeth used to be could be used to secure the picks into some type of handle, but they work fine without the handle - maybe something similar to HPC style sandwiched tang handless.

I hope to have pictures up this week of these two picks. They are my first attempt at a slim line style pic and they work wonders in my opinion (or it could be that I have finally reached a point in my crafting where the picks are becoming more refined tools.) I will also try and get the manufacture name and info on the blade that I have used. The person who gave me the section of the blade asked me to try it out and see how it goes. They are going to bring me the rest of the blade when they hear back from me.

I am a huge fan of hacksaw blade picks - bimetal blades, 32's - but I am considering making an entire set or two out of this new bandsaw material as they are much lighter than my hacksaw blade set, smaller in thickness as well as length <without handles> - and I may be able to fashion them into some type of "jack knife" configuration, I am looking for a compact set that is practical....as always I am running into the issue of tension/torsion bar for the set - wiper blade as usual, but where to store it.

Thanks for the idea of bandsaw blade.

Be well
