Making small picks

I agree about the allen wrenches, buy a cheap set and grind them down. They work great and cost next to nothing.

Tension wrench

Postby SlimPickens » 23 Aug 2003 0:29

Hey, I made a tension wrench as well. I made mine out of a long (4inches) slim nail. I filed the nail flat about half an inch from the tip, then I heated it up with a propane torch and bent it to about an 80 degree angle. I then heated it untell it was glowing orange then dunked it into cold water to temper it(harden the metal). Hope this helps I find it works very well. :)

yo dave im 13 and i also live in Aus. May i reccomend not making ur picks, it is easier to order them over the net, they are of better quality and almost all picks will fit in ur im guessing very very empty wallet lol. Now the cost may worry you, hmm let me think... Ok go to www.southord.com and buy one half hook, a C rake, a tension wrench, and maybe a half diamond. That comes to about $6.50 U.S plus $15 U.S postage, $21.50 U.S, umm about $30 - 32 AUS.
So start saving ur pocket money, (lol [pocket money rox) And get ur dad to but u some using his credit card.

I made my tension wrench by getting hold of the metal from old winshield wipers. then all you do it bend it. It works great and thats what i use. The dimensions are perfent and you dont need to file it at all.

I have made several different tension wrenches out of many different types of materials. allen key ones work pretty well. my favorite so far is the windshield wiper inserts. but I have also made some out of pieces of pen clips. and ive also hammered flat thicker gaged copper wire and filed whatever needed. they worked pretty good as well. just be creative

In my opinion winscreen wiper inserts are probably your best bet for tension wrenches, there easy to obtain and you can cold bend them, ive found that they are alot better then allen keys due to there springy propities. Another alternitive is dip sticks from an old car engine they work fairly well but do require a fair bit if grinding to get them to the right shape. For picks id say the best ones ive made are out of hacksaw blades but dip sticks also made quite good picks, also i made a tiny set out of winscreen wiper inserts which were ok but for my money id stick with hack sawblades for picks and winscreen wiper inserts for tension wrenchs.

here some picks and wrenchs ive made from wiper inserts and hacksaw blades
all these picks can fit into a wallet

wiper set fits into a pen
