I'm new to picking and I have a question

I'm trying to unlock my front door.
I apply tension pressure and I set the pins in place, but it doesnt turn.
I think the pins are in place becuase there isn't anything pushing them down, they're just kind of dangling.
But it still wont turn...

btw, locks turn clockwise right?

first who is the manufacturer? you are most likely false setting security pins. You can search for many threads on security threads. By the way I would link you to a thread but i haven't read how to do that yet. If they are security pins then you should try to find an easier lock to start with. (without security pins) You could buy a quikset for about 9 U.S. dollars at a hardware store. plus you can repin them with security pins later when you get to that level.

Not always, if it's a deadbolt it will always turn towards the hinges.

ya, i think it would be a good idea to start with a cheaper lock. one you can repin. not only is that a better way to start learning but a good way to avoid damaging the lock on your front door.

As alreay said dont pick locks you rely on, if practiseing youve a good chance of getting in a mess.

Your probably applying too much tension and causing your driver pins to bind. Try relaxing your tension a bit. I would recommend not using your doors to practice with though. If your lock is a Kwikset, Defiant, or any of the other cheap locks using the KW1 keyway, it probably doesn't have security pins. Hope this helps.
