discus

Postby raimundo » 3 May 2006 9:27

Abus has been making the discus for a long time, they were out in the late sixties when I first saw them. Now there are some other brands, these are either made in germany by abus and rebranded for comercial liscenses, or are made in china for kryptonite and others. holes are either for draining water off or putting oil in. the chinese model does not have the clamshell case welded in the area under the shackle, this does not probably weaken the design (i doubt that working a tool in there would move the shackle) but it makes it a bad lock in winter, since more water can get in and freeze. Generally easy to pick, they do have spools, and probably some key configurations can make one difficult. definately use a small pick, and sand it smooth. The yale is an abus discus made under liscense, since all the lock companies have been gathered into large cabals, You will find that the discus is a really good practice lock.

forgot one thing

There is another abus lock in the same clamshell stainless case, but it uses a classic abloy tumbler, and can be considered pretty secure, perhaps some other member will add the particular name of this one.
