Off brand re-pinning kits

Off brand re-pinning kits

Postby lockedin » 1 May 2006 12:23

I was just wondering if anyone new where I could get re-pinning kits for off-brand locks such as EZ-set, First Watch, and Mountain Security. All the universal kits seem to only have the typical stuff (i.e. Kwikset, Schlage, and Weiser). I think have I might have to directly contact the manufacturer, but I'm not sure. Thanks in advance.

Um.. seems to me the whole idea of a universal kit is that it is.. oh.. I dunno.... universal. ;)

If you have the space and depth charts, you should be able to pin most any standard pin tumbler lock with it. A .003 kit would give you the most flexibility. There are space and depth charts widely available online, but PM me if you have problems finding them.

Here's one such list, though it doesn't have S&D for the two brands you mentioned, but it does have for a lot:

You can also replace the flat driver pins with upside-down Weiser #2 pins. This gives you a bit more tolerance for "off-shore" locks. On the road (when a universal kit is too slow) this works well, and taking a large drill bit and gently rounding the tops of the cylinder plug for each hole.

With all due respect, that seems like a purely awful idea to me. I would think that the best solution would be to use the correct pins, and not use a drill on your lock.

I find that these locks often use Weiser or Kwickset depths, but when repinning all that matters is the depths you cut the change key to. Anyway I have not had any problems useing a universal .005 kit on these locks the tolerances are not that tight.
