I went to http://www.southord.com/catalog.asp?cat=locksmith and there is things that look odd there, if someone wouldnt mind clarifying for me: (these sets are the 6th and 7th items on the page)
the Eleven Piece Lock Pick Set With Metal Handles (MPSX-11) is on sale for $25.95.
however, the Fourteen Piece Lock Pick Set (PXS-14) has a normal NON-sale price of $24.95
What are the differences of these sets that the one with more would cost less?
I am new to this all and just picked my first lock yesterday with 2 paperclips and am looking to get my feet wet for ~25$ or under. So if you have any other recomendations that fit in that range, post them too please.

The eleven peice set has thicker metal handles, where the 14 peice set just has very thin metal handles. The place where I ordered sent me rubber handles for free when I got the 14 peice, thin handled set. I found picking without the added rubber handles hurt after a while, since they were so thin they dug into my skin. The thick handles, on the other hand, are very nice to pick with, and a nice comfortable grip.

i'd get a set of mpxs from southord, as they have thicker handles as stated and i find them to be very nice. the normal pxs sets have think handles (well, handles are same thickness as pick tips), and tend to dig into your hands in my experience)
get the 11 peice set if you can afford it, if you want cheaper look for the 5 peice mpxs set or whatever, as it comes with the basic picks -- half diamond, short hook, and rake -- which you will probably find yourself using on 95% of pin tumblers.

Hello horntail,
A couple of weeks back I ordered the MPSX-14 (thicker handles) but received the PSX-14 instead (thin handles) by mistake. While I was waiting to receive the right set in the mail, I was using the PSX set and found them to be pretty hard on the fingers. Once I received the MPSX set and used them, I could pick for longer periods of time without my fingers getting too tired. Perhaps my fingers were getting sore from the PSX set because as a beginner, I was holding them too tight. At any rate, I absolutely love the thicker handle set and would recommend the MPSX set to you or any other beginner.
Good luck with your purchase and happy picking.

guess it would be the mpxs-8 peice set on that page that you could get optionally, and would work just fine for getting your feet wet.

As Darek84CJ mentioned, I too received the plastic covers for the handles of the PSX. Although it did make picking easier on my fingers, I didn't particularly care for them. Do your hands/fingers a favor and go with the MPSX.

alright! all of your input has been very helpful! thanks alot guys! I have decided to go with th MPXS-11 because the paperclips made my fingers sore enough lol. Does anyone know of a cheaper place? or a place to compare pick prices at? As mentioned above, I am getting it from http://www.southord.com/catalog.asp?cat=locksmith for $25.95, I'll look around and will probab;y put in my order tomarrow. Also, if you know a place with fast shipping thats nice too.

If you purchase them at www.lockpickshop.com, you can get an additional 10% off your order by typing in LP101 in the coupon code at checkout. They cost $29.95 so with the discount they're almost the same price. Check what the shipping charges are between the two places are and go from there. Hope this helps.

horntail,
To find out the shipping just go through the motion of buying whatever you're buying and go to checkout. Once there fill in all the details and it will ask you what shipping method you want to use and the amount will be there. Don't worry you won't be billed...just make sure you don't press any button that says "Process Order" or something similar.
