Just a quick tip about stuck plugs

Postby sams choice » 4 May 2006 9:57

I recently moved into a new house and on the gate was a small master lock that used an m1 key. I told the management that runs the lease about it and they told me something like they will get to it, so i got my wallet pick set out i made and picked it and it only turned about 20 degrees once it was picked. It was extremely rusted. I got the neat idea to get a bump key out and put it into the lock and then hammer it the rest of the way. This worked and i got the lock off and replaced it with my own. This is just a simple way of getting around haveing to either wd40 it or lube it up. Just a tip. Might work for all of you guys that have problems with other locks that stop about 20 or 30 degrees.

I wouldnt reccomend forcing a lock actually, its all fine and well the odd time you do it and it works but wait until youve got it jammed with something then broken in it.

well first i would recommend that the lock is not something that you would want to keep. One just wants to get access to something. And in case the key does break off in the lock, and you were planning to throw it away anyway, just cut the shackle. Also if it takes alot of force, just stop. Like shrub said, having a lock that wont turn, then a key is broken off inside of it would be a nightmare...

Sounds like a lock to be put in to the cutaway bucket for when you get time

Thats a really good idea. but i dont really have the tools to do a cutaway. All i have is a binch grinder and hand files. Plus it is just a tiny masterlock, but i guess i have nothing to lose to try. I am intrested in making a combination lock cutaway, but once i finish it it really wouldnt be worth it. I just find combinations fascinating, haha.

That happened to me on a cheep 5 pin bass lock made in china i got for 99cents, i picked it but it jammed about half way to opening it, i sprayed a tad bit of lube in it and very gently moved the tension wrench back and forth and it popped.. then never worked again  call me a butcher i know thank god it was only 99 cents and i picked up 5 :D

evilest jammed plug

Postby raimundo » 5 May 2006 10:28

What was described with the master lock is likely either rust or some foreign object obstructing the locking dogs, not the cylinder. this is either some thing that got in the shackle hole when the lock was open and laying in the dirt or someone may have put a toothpick or other deliberate obstruction in it. The evilest plug turning obstruction that you will ever come accross is a broken spring that has worked its way past the top pin and fed its end into the gap between the plug and cylinder this only gets tighter as you force turn the plug.
Maybe we should have a thread for malfunctions that the locksmiths would like to read, like when the dead bolt is closed on a short tailpiece/bad installation/wornout lock and the tailpiece no longer communicates with the bolt. its on the third floor apartment, so no real possiblity of going in the window, its either the sawzall to the door or an attempt to operate the thumbturn on the inside with an under the door lasso tool if the thumb turn still is connected to the bolt, A problem like this came up for me several years ago, and it turned out that the boltwork itself was the problem, the pawl that falls behind the bolt was mounted in some zinc casting that had broken. the pawl that drops behind the bolt to "dead' it and the pieces of the casting had fallen inside the bolts chassis.
Should we start a thread on really difficult malfunctions? :?

i think we should start a thread. That will help alot of people. My masterlock was rust though. I sprayed it with wd40 and it opens with ease. Till it dried up. then i put some graphite in it and now it opens smoothly again. but yeah i like the idea of a thread.
