Old combination lock

Postby taylorgdl » 8 May 2006 9:56

Here'sa lock I picked up from ebay a few days ago. No combination, and 5 dials to work through. Not as bad as you may think though, only the center three actually turn, so in effect there are only ( :!: ) a thousand combinations to work through. I'm up to 200 so far.
Mark on the underside reads "G&P". Anyone with any further info ?

You should be able to figure out the combo on that without having to try every combo. Try applying pressure on the shackle, then feeling each dial for the one with the *most* amount of tension on it. Turn that dial until you feel the tension on it loosen up. Then move on to the dial with the next most tension on it and repeat.

My guess is that it won't take long. Less than a minute likely. Cool lock tho.

Yep, was trying that technique, but the lock is a little too rusted to get the right feedback. Must go and find some WD40 :D

I'm struggling to figure out how the disks can hols the shackle in place and still be turned.

Can somebody clear up my stupidity?

Just a wild guess, but I'm thinking that center pin holds the stack of discs together, and when the proper combination is dialed the shackle will pull free completely. Not sure...hopefully the OP will tell us when he gets it open.

I would think the discs have slots and the shackle is grooved, the discs can turn freely until a hole in the circular slot in the disc comes round to the shackle, line these up in each disc and the shackle will pull.

Its too late now but on locks like that a heavy pull on the shackle will _ the discs at a slight angle, turn the discs from the one furthest away to the shackle first and you will get to a point where the disc then falls back to a vertical state, do this with the other wheels until none of them are being cocked over and you should find the lock open.

Here they are:

By the way, I shimmed it, as you can see in the latter pic's.

The inner three wheels have a gate in them, very much like a modern safe combination lock. The shackle becomes the fence, and its a matter of lining up the gates to allow the shackle to be removed. The shim (made from a floppy disc) allowed me to feel the gates passing the shackle, one whell pack at a time.

That two achievements today !

And yes, that is the combo, 96550.
