You know, I really think one of the beauties of this hobby is that it is really one part art and one part science. The science part is pretty easy to learn. The art comes with practice.
Most any common pick shape is usable in the hands of a skilled lock picker, but there is something to having the right tool for the job. I personally have both a Falle-Safe set, and a wide range of Bogotas and I'll tell you I love them all. I probably reach for the Falle tools more often, because I enjoy single pin picking, but I am often shocked and pleased with how effective Ray's Bogotas really are. "Like black freakin' magic, I tell ya!". However, if all I ever did was rake locks open, I may be very effective with Bogotas, but I'd get pretty bored quickly, and there are always those locks that just don't rake very easily.
Just my $0.02... but it's in Canadian funds, so it's worth less... though these days, not so much less.

When I rake locks I just don't get the sense of accomplishment I get when I pin pick them. Raking gives me the feeling of "Well, I opened the lock, but it was a game of luck." But with pin picking it's more like: "Hey, I'm kinda proud of myself, I just felt all those pins set and knew when the lock was going to open before it popped!" It's especially cool when someone else is watching you and you say "I just need to get this one more pin set..." and about that time it pops open! It brings a grin to my face every time!

agreed some picks have different characteristics, but at the end of the day it's not the pick, but the person using it that eventualy opens the lock.
