Just buy one yale and pin it to 2 pins (1 pin is useless) and then when youve got that down then put an extra pin in it and so on, 5 locks is of no use because you will end up repinning them all to 5 pins in a short time and have 5 locks all of simular difficulty, maybe buy two at most to get the extra pins to make a difficult keying but thats it.

Incidentally get a proper yale and not a bird or somthin, spending £3 on a lock sounds like a bird or simular quality lock to me if buying from a hardware shop.

Yep fine, they are the lock i would advise, in the shops they are deraer than that so its not a bad buy if theyve combined postage as well.

I think you meant £9 for the postage and £5 for the locks lol

Well you may as well hang on to thjem, at that priuce but just re-pin one of them, make it a 2 pin then when you have got good at feeling that repin it as a 3 pin and so on, when you get good at that on 5 pins then just try the others without having to pull them apart.
You would rarely go back to picking 2 and 3 pins on a simple lock, oce youve got the technique and skills built up a bit you may feel you want to drop a pin a few times to go to 4 again but you would never go back to 2 and 3 pins, that would just be taking a step back.

i think one pin is pretty much pointless. as soon as you slide it up to the right height, the lock will pop. IMHO, two would be the lowest number of pins you'd want to use. at least then you'll get some practice with holding one pin via tension while you move the second into position.

just my 1/50th of a dollar.

Hello, i would just like to say thank you shurb for telling me how to repin a lock, i can repin them now in about 2 minutes, i would just like to comment on a few tools to help the process much quicker, instead of the wooden plug follower, i used the plastic casing of a pen like the one which you can view below if you follow the link, it has the correct thickness for what you need. i will tell you what i did below.

1.after i took the lock out by twisting it too about 20degrees and pushing it through with the pen, i let the pins fall out
2. i placed the springs in the top holes by turnning the lock holder upside down so the top pin holes are on the bottom and using needle nose pliers i placed the springs in the holes
3. when the springs were in i held one of the pins in the needle nosed pliers and pushed down on the spring
4. while i was pusing the spring down i inserted the pen at the back with the end which you write with coming through, the angle of the pen nose allows you to have enough space for the needle nose pliers to be removed and to cath the pin so it doesnt fall out, i repeated the process and pushed the pen further up untill all the pins that i need were in
5. i inserted the lock and pushing the pen down in the lock holder forcing the pins down i pushed the lock all the way through and twisted it untill it locked.

P.S this is just my method of doing it i find it much easier this way because of the angle of the nose of the pen, which allows more movement when inserting the pins, i really need pictures for you to understand it completely.

nice instructions and a nice thread. I wish I had a chance to help, since I am decent in repinning. It is hard for me to explain though, so good job on making a thread and posting instructions. good luck
