Uk Locksmith wages

Postby kwc » 17 May 2006 14:40

Hi All,
Can anyone tell me the going rate for a trainee locksmith and a fully trained locksmith. Also going rate of wages for safe engineers (in Uk).
Thanks
Kev

as almost no employed jobs exist in the uk , its impossible to answer.

a busy locksmith can earn well, the majority as industry is overcrowded struggle to make a living wage at all.

a top safe engineer can earn £3k a day, but you must be one of the top 10 in the country for this, and world renowned.

i would say an average locksmith with his own set up, effective marketing and a degree of skill will earn about £17k a year , an established well known and skilled lockie probably £50k a year, a trainee, maybe minimum wage if very lucky.

employed positions, trust me, unless extremely lucky, forget it! it will never happen. though dyno franchisees are employing lockies on £18k a year, but must be fully kitted out and fully experienced.

Its like any trade if you know your job you get paid a fair price once you and more importantly real tradsmen know you are sound at your job. ie carpenters £140.00 min a day, sparks £160 easy a day (but you need to know your trade)

£2.59ph as I do live in the posh part of the country, which is ok as I have found that turps with lime in one of the many local parks is very cost effective and my once a year wash in the river cam is free!

Ive got a few Q and As to the lasts few posts.
Martin, id put Al Morgan in that top 10 of safe engineers and i reckon hed argue on the 3k thing! I agree with most of what you say but one of the top 10 is working for Chubb and i doubt hes earning anywhere near that a week let alone a day!
Ill agree that employed positions are fairly hard to come by but not impossible, i myself would possibly like to take someone on and i spent a good night yesterday with a good lockie/guy from the midlands who would certainly think about it. Most of the best locksmiths i know are those who went through an apprenticeship/trainee position (no offence to the likes of Dom,Shaun etc)
KWC are you looking to get into lockssmithing or are you already one of us?
If youre not ,this is the attitude that gets to me a little bit.
If you are a new lockie employed by a company then i reckon 13k is indeed a fortune, if youve done a course and youve been promised earnings of 1k a week then youve been lied to. I would not care one jot if the likes of Al,Pinky,Chris, etc were earning 10k a bloody week as i know these guys have done their time and know their stuff but if youve just come into the trade you are NOT going to earn a fortune overnifgt.

Darren 2.50 is a little much for Chris i think id be thinking along the lines of 1.50
Christopher, you live in the "posh " part of the country because for some inexplicable reason Corrina puts up with you for 3 nights a week ,otherwise you live in the shit pit of England ie Luton and evenLutonions find you a little offensive!
As for the pub thing ,god help us all!!!!!
My "half irish" buddy, i hope you take this with the tongue in cheek humour thats intended. Ive had far too many tonight and im listening to the Beach Boys so youve got something to hammer me with again

Hi Acl,
I presently work in the alarm industry. My first job was with a company who did alarms and also locksmithing. I started to learn the locksmith side when my boss of the family business fell ill and sold up. All the companies i have worked for only do alarms.

I have a basic set of tools and pratice at home.
I have not attended any courses and don't want to go it alone.

My problem is getting started with a decent wage as if i start training then i will need to take a wage drop!

I would like to start training if the money is the same as i get now and thats why i asked the question.

andy

the 3k a day pop , is a dig at a well known safe engineer who called me to ask me to id and view a safe for him, he couldnt be bothered as already £3k up at mid afternoon.

didnt you know andy, locksmithing is the land of gold and honey mate, a shortage of locksmiths, more work than you can cope with, nationals throwing money at you, all you need is a short course and your in the big time, it must be true those nice training companies on the net and cd's on ebay say so mate.
in fact this really nice guy wanted to be trained in domestic and commercial, autos and safes in a week, and know enough to make his fortune from day 1, when i told him it wasnt possible, i had my wings clipped and was told by a real training firm that it was, as your aquaintance dan collins is selling him just such a course, as advertised in the sun !!!

KWC, where exactly are you?
Martin, i think i can guess who said enginner is!!
I think you know where i stand with Dan, i like the the guy and he passes me me a fair bit of work. I dunno maybe im a bad judge of character ,when i worked with Mark Makowski i thought he was one of the funniest guys id met! I class Chistopher as a friend! I think Darrens a fairly sober well adjusted bloke!!, hell i even like you!!! God i should be certified!
